Lindsborg, Kan. – Jerry McNew tied the school career home run record (as an NAIA program) with his 26th career blast as the Mid-America Christian University Evangels split a doubleheader with the Bethany College Swedes today (Apr. 25) in Lindsborg, Kan. The Evangels fell 12-11 in the first game but rebounded to win the second game 5-2.

The record-tying homer came in the top of the first of the opening tilt, a two-run shot that put the Evangels on top 2-0.

The Evangels built an 11-5 lead in the fifth, bolstered by McNew's homer and also a two-run homer by Jacob Martinez and a solo blast from Ryan Moseley.

But the Swedes rallied back with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before ending it in the seventh as a two-run double by Alex Martinez capped the walk-off win for Bethany.

Moseley and Martinez each went three-for-four in the first game for the Evangels, while McNew also doubled home two runs in the fourth to give him four RBIs.

Kevin Lentzner also had two hits for MACU.

In the nightcap, it was the Evangels who came back from a deficit, overcoming an early 2-0 hole with a run in the fourth before taking the lead for good with two in the fifth.

A bases-loaded walk to Pedro Varela accounted for the run in the fourth and Jake White singled home Brandon Schoelkopf with the tying run in the fifth. White then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

The Evangels then added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Varela was two-for-three for the Evangels in the second game, while Zach Carley blanked the Swedes over the final five innings on only one hit.

Carley allowed two runs on two hits overall in his seven innings, striking out six and walking four.

The Evangels will next host St. Gregory's University Friday afternoon (Apr. 28) at 1 pm to begin a three-game series.

MACU will then play a twinbill at SGU Saturday (Apr. 29), also beginning at 1 pm.
