OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian University volleyball team returned home for only the second time in 2017, opening Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday evening at the Gaulke Activity Center. The home crowd was energetic all night long, but the crowd was unable to lift the Lady Evangels on the court.

MACU (2-8, 1-3) struggled early in the first two sets, and the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions (14-2, 4-0) took full advantage, taking a straight sets win 25-13, 25-15, 25-14.

SAGU opened the first set on a 7-1 run, and they never looked back. Both teams hit well in the opening set, but SAGU attacked the ball at a blistering .520 clip as they cruised to a 25-13 win in the frame. The second set opened similarly, with SAGU scoring the first four points and slowly pulling away, taking the 25-15 win to push their advantage to 2-0 heading into the intermission. MACU rode the energy of the crowd early in the third set, opening a 5-2 lead, but a 6-0 run that turned a 12-10 SAGU lead into an 18-10 advantage put the match out of reach, and SAGU coasted in with the 25-14 set win to complete the sweep.

Breeana Fritschow led the Lady Evangels with 10 kills in the match, and Melissa Hoppal led MACU in assists (22) and digs (9). MACU struggled uncharacteristically on the block, notching only two blocks in the match.

MACU will be back in action on Saturday at Noon when they welcome the Texas Wesleyan University Rams (13-1, 3-1) to the Gaulke Activity Center. The match was originally slated for 1 p.m., but it has been moved up an hour to accommodate other matches on MACU's campus.
