OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian University volleyball team entered their match with St. Gregory's University on Friday night knowing that they had an opportunity to show what they could do. The Lady Evangels had shown their ability to get close at times in the season against good teams, but on Friday night, the Lady Evangels took the next step.

MACU (4-11, 3-6 SAC) hit the ball at better than a .300 clip in two of the match's four sets, and they kept St. Gregory's (14-7, 4-4 SAC) off balance all night, taking a four-set victory 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23 to claim their first home win of the season.

The Lady Evangels came out on fire in the first set. MACU opened the frame on a 9-2 run, and they eventually led by as many as eight in the set. They hit the ball at a .314 pace in the stanza, belting 14 kills in the set while forcing nine St. Gregory's attack errors as the Lady Evangels took the set 25-19.

St. Gregory's battled back in the second frame, inching out to a five-point lead late in the stanza before MACU closed the gap. Laurel Church served three straight points for the Lady Evangels late in the set, helping MACU close to within two at 24-22 before St. Gregory's closed the set out and sent the match to intermission with a 25-22 set victory.

MACU came out of the locker room on a mission. The Lady Evangels again hit the ball well in the third frame, posting an attack percentage of .360 in the stanza, and a late 5-0 run helped the Lady Evangels take a 25-17 set win to take the lead in the match 2-1. The fourth set was a nip-and-tuck affair, and late in the set, MACU put together a 5-1 run to take a 23-20 lead. After SGU took three of four points to close to within one at 24-23, Mary Seifert picked up a kill to end it, giving MACU the 25-23 win in the set and the 3-1 win in the match.

Church recorded her second double-double of the season (16 K, 10 D), Melissa Hoppal had her sixth double-double (26 A, 17 D), and Ryann Hale (14 A, 13 D) had her first career double-double in the match. Breeana Fritschow had 14 kills in the match, and Gabrielle Poling had 13 digs as well.

MACU will have the weekend off, and the Lady Evangels will be back in action on Tuesday night. On Tuesday, MACU will host Bacone College (6-11, 0-7 SAC) at 7 p.m.
