Mitchell Sowerby is entering his second season at the Head Coach of the MACU men's soccer program in 2020.
In his first season as the Evangels' Head Coach, Sowerby guided MACU to new heights in the program. Not only did Sowerby lead the team to several record-breaking marks during the year, but also led the program to its first ever NCCAA National Championship.
Under Sowerby's tutelage, the team won the most games in program history, going 20-3-1 and closing out the campaign with a 5-0 victory over Grace College in the NCCAA National Championship match. As a result, Sowerby was selected as the NCCAA Coach of the Year and the staff as a whole received the United Soccer Coaches NCCAA Staff of the Year honor.
Mid-America Christian also turned in its best ever finish in Sooner Athletic Conference play, completing the regular season with a 7-1-1 record and finished second in the league standings, just a half-game back of John Brown for the conference title. As a result, the Evangels landed a program-record nine players on the All-SAC Team, which included Dejue Johnson as the SAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Sowerby coached five players to NCCAA All-American honors, which included the program's first ever NCCAA Player of the Year in Stephen Nganga.
The Evangels shattered every NAIA era offensive record during the 2019 campaign, including: goals scored (94), assists (81), points (267), shots (460) and shots on-goal (235). MACU was also just as stellar on the defensive side of the pitch, recording the NAIA era season records for goals against average (0.9) and shutouts (13).
Before joining the Evangels, Sowerby served a stint on the staff with NCAA Division II Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma. Sowerby joined the coaching staff in 2016 after his playing career at RSU wrapped up. He was a part of a staff that posted a 26-21-8 record in his three seasons with the Hillcats. In 2017, the Hillcats were 10-6-3 overall, including a 7-5-2 mark in the Heartland Conference that put them in a tie for second in the HC's North Division. The record was also good enough to advance RSU to the HC Tournament for the first time in program history. The Hillcats finished alone in second in the division in 2017 with an 8-7-3 record overall, and a 5-6-3 mark in the HC; and in 2018, RSU posted an 8-8-2 record overall and a 6-6-2 mark in conference.
Sowerby is the only three-time All-Heartland Conference selection in RSU history, earning the nod as a First Team defender during his sophomore season in 2013 and as a Second Team selection in his junior and senior campaigns. In his final two seasons, Sowerby earned NSCAA All-South Central Region honors, and he was a NSCAA Scholar All-South Region. Sowerby appeared in 70 games and started in 66, including every game in his final three seasons, and played more career minutes than any other field player in RSU program history.
He has also served as the youth academy director for Northeastern Oklahoma FC since 2017. During his time at NEOFC, he was responsible for overseeing daily operations and implementing new curriculum. Sowerby also coached multiple club teams and directed all on-field training sessions. He also monitored player developments.
Sowerby holds a pair of coaching licenses. He holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "B" License, and he also has an English F.A. Level 1 License. Sowerby is currently pursuing his Master's of Science degree in Leadership at Mid-America Christian.
