Evangel Comeback In Opener Falls Short

Aug. 24, 2007

8/24/08 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Evangels' comeback attempt fell short as they lost 3-2 to the Our Lady of the Lakes College Saints Aug. 24 at the James Curtis Athletic Complex.

The Evangels went down 3-0 early on to the Saints, but made a comeback effort falling just short. The loss gives the Evangels a 0-1 record to begin the season.

"If we only played the first half like the second half, we probably would have won," Coach Zac Bice said. "We just dug ourselves too deep a hole."

The game started off well as the Evangels fought off the pressure by forcing the actions against the Saints. The game was scoreless until the Evangels gave up a goal mid-way through the first half, which was followed by two more quick scores. The Evangels had their chances to answer the early challenge from the Saints, but failed to capitalize on early opportunities. These failed chances led to a 3-0 halftime deficit for the Evangels.

"I was disappointed at halftime," Bice said. "We are capable of playing much better."

The Evangels came out of halftime with more fire than the first half and desperately tried to make it a game. MACU was able to get on the board in the second half when Clint Paxton scored a goal on a pass from Donte Roberti. Paxton's first goal of the season brought the Evangels within two of the Saints.

As MACU began to force the action, the momentum began switching to the home team's side. With 20 minutes remaining, Bryce Jantz scored his first goal of the season on a pass from Claxton. This proved to be the last the score of the game as the Evangels comeback attempt fell short.

The MACU men's soccer team will continue to look for its first win of the season as it plays host to Oklahoma Wesleyan University August 28, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. at James Curtis Athletic Complex.
