9/10/07 - WAXAHACHIE, Texas - It took a late overtime victory, but the Mid-America Christian University Evangels were able to split a pair of games as part of a five-game road trip improving their record to 3-2-1.
On Friday, September 9, 2007, the Evangels traveled to Fort Worth, Texas to and lost 3-1 against Texas Wesleyan University. The following day the Evangels were able to use an overtime goal to secure a 2-1 victory against Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, Texas.
"We had a good weekend overall," Coach Zac Bice said. "It would have been nice to win both games, but Texas Wesleyan was a good team."
In the opener against Texas Wesleyan, the Rams scored two goals midway through the first half and led the Evangels 2-0 at the half. Junior Bryce Jantz scored an unassisted goal in the opening minutes of the second half to cut the Rams' lead to 2-1. The two teams battled back and forth the entire second half, but it was a late Texas Wesleyan goal which secured the 3-1 victory for the Rams. Despite the close score, the Rams outshot the Evangels 35-6 and controlled the time of possession.
"The big key in the game was the shot count," Bice said. "They had a lot more opportunities than we did and we were fortunate the game was as close as it was."
Freshman Austin Custar had seven saves in goal for the Evangels.
The Evangels were able to bounce back from the loss to Texas Wesleyan University with a 2-1 overtime victory against the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions on Saturday.
The Lions scored the lone goal in the first half as the Evangels trailed 1-0 at halftime. The second half proved to be a defense struggle much like the first half, but MACU's Tyler Jones was able to get Joey Yeisley the ball as Yesiley scored and tied the match 1-1.
"I was confident going into overtime," Bice said . "We have experience in overtime games this year."
The Evangels turned to the team leader in scoring Jantz as he scored off a Jones assist.
MACU will conclude its five-game road trip on September 13, 2007 traveling Winfield, Kansas. The Evangels will play Southwestern College with the game starting at 7:00 p.m.
