Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Travis McNamara scored the game-winning goal with less than nine minutes remaining to give the St. Gregory's Cavaliers a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Mid-America Christian Evangels in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both schools Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 28).
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for MACU and puts the Evangels back to .500 at 3-3-3 overall.
With the match tied 1-1, Alex Guerrero executed a corner kick that found McNamara in front of the net at the 81:30 mark and the Cavaliers (3-3, 1-0 SAC) held on for the victory.
It was Guerrero that gave the Cavaliers the lead in the 12th minute of action when he scored off a set piece after the Evangels were guilty of a foul deep in their own end.
The Evangels then quickly tied it up 10 minutes later when Casey King took a pass from Andrew Webster and broke away to the middle of the box for a goal at the 22:37 mark.
Jeremiah Huff had a match-high six shots, with two on-goal for the Evangels (3-3-3, 0-1 SAC).
King had five shots and a team-high three shots on-goal.
Igor Manfro led the Cavaliers with two shots.
The Evangels had plenty of opportunities to score, out-shooting the Cavaliers 26-9 overal and 10-3 on-goal.
Austin Custer recorded one save for the Evangels, while Josue Moriera saved nine shots for the Cavaliers.
The Evangels will continue action in the SAC by hosting Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 2) at 1:30 p.m.
