Evangels play John Brown to 1-1 tie

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels wrapped up the home portion of their schedule by playing the John Brown University Golden Eagles to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in a Sooner Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 24) at MACU Soccer Field.

Kevin Cabello scored the first goal of the game by heading in a corner kick by Javier Hernandez in the 27th minute of the opening half to put the Evangels on top.

The Evangels (8-5-2, 2-3-2 SAC) maintained that lead until Eli Simonsen scored off a set piece at the 66:13 mark of the second half to knot up the score and eventually send it to overtime.

In the two overtime sessions, the Golden Eagles held a modest 4-2 shots advantage but neither squad could dent the scoreboard.

The Golden Eagles (6-6-2, 2-4-1 SAC) out-shot the Evangels 21-18 overall and 12-6 on-goal.  Raphael Bonelle and Ryan Hayes each led MACU with four shots, while Simonsen had a match-high six shots for JBU.

Tyler McIntosh stopped a whopping 11 shots in the net for the Evangels and Pablo Garcia recorded five saves for the Golden Eagles.

The Evangels will finish up the regular season at Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday night (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
