John Brown Holds off Evangels 3-2 in SAC Tournament Quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Martin Gonzalez scored two goals in the first half and that proved to be just enough to carry the John Brown University Golden Eagles to a 3-2 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals Saturday afternoon (Nov. 3) at MACU Soccer Field.

With the win, JBU advances to the SAC semifinals and will host Oklahoma City University on Tuesday (Nov. 6), who upset top-seeded USAO on penalty kicks.

All the goals were scored in a frantic first half, starting with Gonzalez' first score on a blast from 30 yards out just five minutes into the match.

Duncan Mbugua then tied the score by dribbling past a defender to get a clean look at the net for a goal at the 11:24 mark.

Gonzalez again fired away and scored in the 19th minute, this time from 20 yards out into the left inside of the net that put JBU back in front.

Zari Prescod then gave the Golden Eagles (8-6-2) some breathing room by scoring at the 24:49 point for a two-goal lead.

MACU (9-6-2) wasn't done though as Willy Deleon got free and connected from 20 yards out off an assist from Mbugua in the 35th minute.

The Evangels couldn't break through with the tying goal in the second half despite out-shooting the Golden Eagles 15-6 in the final 45 minutes.

In the final 10 minutes, the Evangels had five shots, including one that went off the crossbar by Brett Brown, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Mbugua paced the Evangels with match-highs of eight shots and four shots-on-goal.  Gonzalez had a team-high seven shots to lead JBU.

The Evangels out-shot the Golden Eagles 24-15 overall, but the shots-on-goal were even at 9-9.

Tyler McIntosh made six saves in the net for the Evangels and JBU's Pablo Garcia stopped seven shots.

MACU will now await their seed and opponent in the upcoming National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Regional Tournament.
