OKLAHOMA CITY --
Duncan Mbugua and
Tyler McIntosh sent the Mid-America Christian University faithful home happy by powering the MACU Evangels to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions in the season-opener for both teams Friday afternoon (Aug. 24) at MACU Soccer Field.
The two squads played to a scoreless tie through the first 100 minutes, but Mbugua finally broke through off a nifty kick from goalkeeper
Tyler McIntosh 45 seconds into the second extra session.
It was also McIntosh's work in the net that allowed the Evangels a chance for a dramatic outcome. In his first career start, McIntosh recorded 11 saves while facing 19 shot attempts.
The Lions out-shot the Evangels 19-14 overall and 11-7 on-goal. Mbugua also netted team-highs of four shots and three shots-on-goal for MACU.
Cesar Galvan stopped six shots in the net for the Lions, while Daniel Martinez, Lee Kounas and Parker Sturgeon led SAGU with four shots each.
The Evangels will next host former Sooner Athletic Conference rival Okahoma Christian University on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 28) at 4 p.m.
