Pioneers Stun Evangels 2-1 in OT

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Taval Whittaker scored just 30 seconds into the overtime period to give the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers a 2-1 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in Sooner Athletic Conference action today (Oct. 4) at MACU Soccer Field.

Whittaker gained possession for the winning attempt and stepped in and fired a shot into the net from 30 yards away at the 90:30 mark.

Paul Copeland had given the Evangels (5-5, 1-1 SAC) the lead in the first half by taking advantage of the goalkeeper coming out of the box and putting in a shot from near midfield.

It looked as though that may be enough until Alex Grattarola scored off an assist from Whittaker with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Tyler McIntosh made seven saves for the Evangels in the net to give MACU every chance to win.  John Ramses-Thomas made one save for the Pioneers (7-4, 1-1 SAC).

The Pioneers out-shot the Evangels 14-5 overall, including an 8-0 edge in the second half and overtime session.

The Evangels will next play Tuesday night (Oct. 7) at Oklahoma Baptist University.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
