Evangels Hold Off Bethel in 2-1 Win

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels grinded out a 2-1 victory over the Bethel College (Kan.) Threshers today (Sept. 24) at MACU Soccer Field.

The Evangels led 2-0 until Alex Hagan cut the deficit in half with a goal at the 76:22 mark of the second half.

But the Evangels buckled down from there and held the Threshers without a shot attempt the rest of the way to seal the win.

The match was scoreless throughout much of the first half until Tej Trivedi blasted in a shot off a cross from Joe Alvarez in the 40th minute to give the Evangels the lead going into the break.

Danny Hernandez then made it 2-0 by heading in a cross from Devin Theisen to the middle of the box at the 57:13 mark.

The Evangels (4-4) held a 19-8 edge in overall shots and out-shot the Threshers 12-3 on-goal.

Tyler McIntosh stopped two shots in the net for the Evangels, while Jesus Hernandez kept Bethel close with nine saves.

Hernandez had a match-high four shots to lead MACU, with Trivedi and Juan Mendez each tallying three shots.

The Evangels will now open up the Sooner Athletic Conference slate Friday afternoon (Sept. 26) at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.  The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas.
