Victoria, Texas -- After a scoreless first half, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars broke through with two goals and held on for a 2-1 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels today (Sept. 5) in Victoria, Texas.
It was Hector Gonzalez that found the net first off a deflection in the 60th minute to put the Jaguars on top.
Miguel Cruz then scored off a cross from Giovanni Najar just eight minutes later to make it a 2-0 lead for UHV.
The Evangels (1-1) cut the lead in half when Danny Hernandez netted his second career goal at the 85:05 mark, but that's all MACU could muster in the second half.
UHN held a 15-7 edge in overall shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Tyler McIntosh stopped four shots for MACU, while Brian Redmond made one save for the Jaguars (3-1-1).
The Evangels will face Louisiana State-Alexandria tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 6) at 4 p.m., also in Victoria, Texas on the campus of Houston-Victoria.
