Men's Soccer Evangels Fall 6-1 to Wayland Baptist

OKLAHOMA CITY – Taval Whittaker scored two goals to lead the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers to a 6-1 win over the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in Sooner Athletic Conference action today (Oct. 14) at Evangel Field.

Javier Parry scored in the ninth minute of the opening half to put the Pioneers on the board, only to have Gustavo Urbina put in his first career goal at the 37:24 mark to bring the Evangels even at 1-1.

But Ezequiel Amestoy promptly put the Pioneers back on top less than a minute later by heading in a feed from Alex Castillo.

Amestoy then assisted on Whittaker's first goal with just 25 seconds left in the first half to put the Pioneers up 3-1 heading into the break.

Following goals from James Quinn and Guillermo Deal that gave the Pioneers a four-goal lead, Whittaker finished out the scoring with his second goal at the 64:48 mark.

The Pioneers (8-3-2, 4-0-1 SAC) out-shot the Evangels 24-6 overall and 16-5 on-goal.

Jakob O'Meara-Gill stopped a career-best nine shots in the net for MACU (2-10, 0-5 SAC), while Joao Souza and Raheem Fleming each made two saves for the Pioneers.

The Evangels will be in action next Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 18) at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.  The match is set for 3 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas.
