Men's Soccer Scores Three in Second Half to Rally for 3-1 Win on Senior Day

OKLAHOMA CITY – In the first half of their match against Texas Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon, the Mid-America Christian University men's soccer team was unable to generate many great scoring opportunities. In the final 45 minutes, however, the Evangels were dominant, and they rallied to set another program record.

MACU (12-4-1, 6-3-1 SAC) got three goals in the final 35 minutes, including two more from the Sooner Athletic Conference's leading goal scorer Dominik Tajak, as the Evangels erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Rams (4-11-1, 2-7-1 SAC) 3-1.

Tajak nearly broke the ice in the second minute, leaving a shot high, and after the Rams weathered the storm, it was TWU who got on the board first. Anthony Atilola of the Rams curled a shot inside the right goalpost past a diving Jakob O'Meara-Gill to give the Rams the 1-0 lead. O'Meara-Gill made two more saves in the half, and MACU managed only two shots in the final 23 minutes of the half, and at the break the Rams led 1-0.

It did not take long after halftime for the level of desperation from the Evangels – who were playing to try and keep their hopes of a home match in the SAC quarterfinals alive – to pay dividends. Giovanni Sosa carried the ball to the end line just to the left of the goal frame and slid a pass into the middle to Tajak, who played the ball into the net with his left heel to tie the game on his 21st goal of the season. Tajak struck again in the 62nd minute, this time off a perfect feed from Brad Bennions to give MACU the lead for the first time. 11 minutes later, senior Oscar Ochoa picked up his first career goal, finishing a textbook feed from Sage Moore to add an insurance marker. MACU kept pressing over the final 17 minutes, keeping Texas Wesleyan on their heels and preventing them from mounting a comeback, and MACU took the win 3-1.

Jakob O'Meara-Gill (11-2-1) made three saves in the win, and Bastian Blumenberg (4-11-1) took the loss for the Rams, allowing three goals and making three stops.

The win kept alive the Evangels' hopes for a home game in the SAC tournament quarterfinals temporarily, but wins later in the afternoon from Oklahoma City University and the University of Science & Arts locked the Evangels into the fifth seed in the upcoming tournament.

The Evangels will be on the road at USAO (12-5-1) in the SAC quarterfinals on Thursday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
