KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2018 postseason men's soccer top-25 poll on Wednesday afternoon, and for the first time in program history, the Mid-America Christian University men's soccer team was included in the rating.
MACU (13-6-1) finished in the final 16 at the NAIA National Championship, and as a result of their run - which began as the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament champions (pictured) above - the Evangels cracked the poll in the #17 spot.
The Evangels were the only SAC team to appear in the final poll after MACU upset their way from being the #5 seed in the SAC Championship all the way to the NAIA final site. The run began on November 3 with a 2-0 win at Oklahoma City University which was followed by the Evangels vanquishing three straight ranked opponents on the road. It started with then #13 Wayland Baptist in the SAC semifinal, then the Evangels advanced past the 20th-ranked Drovers of the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma to claim the SAC title. In the NAIA Opening Round, the Evangels then bounced then #21 Kansas Wesleyan University to earn their trip to the final site of the NAIA Championship. At the final site, the Evangels run came to an end at the hands of the eventual National Champion Central Methodist (Mo.) Eagles in the round of 16.
The Evangels tied the program record for both wins in a single season (13) and shutouts in a season (8). It also marked the first time in program history that the Evangels had qualified for national tournaments in consecutive years, as the 2017 Evangels made it to the NCCAA National Championship.
