OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 21 Mid-America Christian men's soccer team shattered multiple program records in a 24-0 victory over Bacone College on Tuesday.
Mid-America Christian (10-1) tallied 24 goals, which doubled the program's goal-scoring record in a match with the previous high being a 12-goal output in a 12-1 win over Dallas Christian on Sept. 18, 2018.
Mid-America Christian also eclipsed its program shots record with 56 attempts, topping the previous best of 39 that was set twice previously in MACU history, first coming in a 2-0 win over Bethel College in 2012 before a 39-shot effort in a 4-3 loss at Texas College matched it on Sept. 17, 2015.
Senior forward Allan Sorato put together one of the finest individual performances in program history to lead the Evangels, tallying a MACU single game record five goals to go with an assist for 11 points in the match.
Pero Mikulic and Simon Van Rheeden cemented their names in the MACU record books right behind Sorato as each recorded nine points in the match. Mikulic tallied four goals, the second-most in program history to go with an assist while Van Rheeden recorded a hat trick in both goals and assists with three apiece.
In his first match of the season, Michael Reyna made it count as the fourth Evangel with a hat trick, scoring three goals in the match.
It didn't take long for MACU to get things rolling as Tiuri Schieving and Dominik Tajak scored back-to-back goals in the second minute to hold an early 2-0 edge.
MACU revved up the offensive attack between the 11th and 18th minutes as Van Rheeden and Sorato combined to score five goals in the seven-minute stretch to extend the lead to 7-nil.
The Evangels were able to keep the offensive pressure going even with a massive line change in the 20th minute. At the 21:59 mark, Jake Cowie scored his first goal of the season off a Josue Alanis corner kick to set the score at 8-nil.
Mikulic and Reyna made a major impact following the Cowie goal with each tallying two goals in a 20-minute stretch. Mikulic pushed across his first goal in the 23rd minute and followed it up with a 28th minute score while Reyna knocked in his first career goal in the 39th minute and followed it up with an immediate score in the 40th minute.
Diego Romero chipped in on the scoring spree at the 24:15 mark while Alanis recorded his first goal of the 2019 season off a penalty kick just before the end of the first half to send the Evangels into the halftime break with a 14-nil advantage.
Sorato and Van Rheeden picked up right where they left off at the start of the second half as Sorato pitched in goals in the 50th and 60th minutes while Van Rheeden pushed across his third score of the day in the 52nd minute to extend MACU's lead to 17-0.
Mikulic once again made a big impact after subbing in during the second half, racking up two more goals in the 64th and 71st minutes while Reyna earned his hat trick with a score at the 74th minute mark.
In a match filled with firsts, Quan Van entered the box score with his first career goal at the 53:35 mark, 22 seconds after recording his second career assist in Mikulic's third goal.
Hector Valles made his mark during his first match of the season, recording a goal in the 66th minute after breaking through the Warriors defense with some strong dribbling the box and placing a shot into the goal from the left side.
A Bacone own goal in the 76th minute off a corner kick and a Cesar Romero score in the 79th minute capped the scoring for MACU in the contest.
On top of surpassing the shots record, MACU's effective attack was able to put a program record 44 shots on-goal. The mark blew away the previous best of 23 that was set twice, the last coming against Southwestern College in a 6-1 win on Sept. 2, 2017. The defense was also outstanding in the effort by setting the program record for the least amount of shots in a game by not letting the Warriors take a single shot in the contest..
Sorato was sharp in leading the Evangels offense as his five goals were converted off a team-high 10 shots, eight of which were on-goal. Mikulic finished the match with nine shots with seven being on-target.
Sophomore goalkeeper Austen Parker continued his ascent up the MACU record books as well, moving alone into second for most shutouts in a season with seven, putting him just one back of the MACU record set by Jakob O'Meara-Gill during the 2017 campaign.
With the completion of non-conference play, Mid-America Christian will make its way back to Sooner Athletic Conference action on Saturday as the Evangels will host Southwestern Assemblies of God for a 3 p.m. match at Evangel Field.
