Men’s Soccer Bounces Back With Big Win Over Bethel

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 20 Mid-America Christian men's soccer team rebounded from its mid-week loss to LSU Shreveport with a big time win over Bethel College (Kan.) on Friday, matching a season-best five goals to defeat the Threshers 5-0 for its first home victory of the 2019 season.

The Evangels completely dominated the possession game while taking 18 shots and putting 12 on-goal, while limiting Bethel (1-4) to just two shots, only of which was on-target.

Sophomore Rodrigo Albuquerque not only scored his first goal of the season, but tallied a pair of goals, Allan Sorato and Simon Van Rheeden notched scores and Kieran Chance scored his first goal of the year in the victory.

Mid-America Christian (4-1) quick to strike with a ninth minute score when Endri Copa was able to find Allan Sorato from the left side near the goal box and he was able to find Albuquerque near the left post for the game-winning goal.

After missing the LSU Shreveport match, Fabian Forisch made his presence felt in the 25th minute when he launched a deep cross from the right side that found Sorato and he was able find the back of the net for the two-goal advantage.

Moments later, Albuquerque was fouled by the goalkeeper in the box, setting up a penalty kick at the 19:03 mark. His penalty kick was saved by the diving keeper, but Albuquerque was able to track down the loose ball and fire it into the back of the net to make it a 3-nil game.

MACU added one more goal for good measure in the half. In the 39th minute, Bruno Bandeira dished a cross to an open Van Rheeden on the left side of the goal box, firing a shot past the keeper for his second goal of the 2019 season, sending the Evangels into the break with a four-goal edge.

The four-goal effort tied the most scores in a half for MACU this season, matching the outpouring in the second half of the Evangels' 5-2 win at Sterling last week.

It didn't take long for the Evangels to add to its outburst in the second half as Chance found the back of the net off of a Gustavo Urbina shot that deflected off the goalkeeper. The loose ball caromed over to Chance on the left side of the box and his point-blank shot in the 50th minute rounded out the scoring in the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Austen Parker pitched his third shutout of the 2019 season and moved to 4-1 on the season while making a save to boot.

Mid-America Christian will renew its rivalry with Randall University tomorrow as the two teams will square off at 3:30 p.m. at Evangel Field.
