Evangels Rack Up Season-Highs In Shutout Victory Over Oklahoma Baptist

OKLAHOMA CITY – In its final non-conference tune-up before the start of Sooner Athletic Conference play, the Mid-America Christian men's soccer team came out firing on all cylinders, scoring a season-high nine goals in a 9-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist at Evangel Field on Monday.

After missing the first six matches of the season, senior forward Rai Ramus made an impact in his return by scoring two goals while Evangels' leading scorer Stephen Nganga chipped in a pair of goals as well to lead the MACU attack on the afternoon. Caleb Roldan notched four points in the match, tallying a team-high two assists to go with a goal of his own.

Nganga put Mid-America Christian (6-1) up early, scoring his first goal of the match in the fifth minute off a beautiful cross from the left side by Roldan, slipping his shot in the bottom left corner of the goal to make it a 1-nil Evangels advantage.

The Evangels stretched their lead to two in the 25th minute with Ramus' first goal of the 2019 campaign. The 2018 leading scorer for MACU found the back of the net off of a breakaway down the right side when Simon Van Rheeden collected a loose ball on the right side of the goal box. Van Rheeden found Ramus wide open on the left side of the box and he fired a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal past the diving keeper.

Ramus scored once again 13 minutes later when Kieran Chance broke away down the left side and laced a cross for Ramus near the right side, knocking the pass down and firing in a shot from point-blank to extend the MACU advantage to 3-nil.

Mid-America Christian was quick to strike again as Nganga added his second goal in the 40th minute. The Evangels were able to take advantage of a Carlos Castrejon corner kick as his free attempt was initially deflected by an OBU player. The loose ball found Gustavo Urbina on the right side of the box and he tapped a nice touch pass back to the middle for Nganga, launching a shot through the top portion of the goal to send the Evangels into the half with a 4-0 edge.

MACU dominated Oklahoma Baptist in the opening half, outshooting the Bison by a 15-3 margin.

After recording an assist in the first half, Roldan got in on the scoring action in the second half when he recovered a loose ball on the left side of the box after an OBU clear ricochet off the head of Urbina. Roldan tapped a shot into the bottom right corner just out of the reach of the keeper coming out to make a play on the ball, setting the score at 5-0 at the 50:13 mark.

In the 59th minute, Tiuri Schieving notched his first goal of the season when Roldan launched a beautiful cross from the left side that found the head of Shieving, putting the ball into the right side of the net, setting the score to 6-nil.

Two minutes later, Dejue Johnson tallied his first goal of 2019 campaign when Simon Van Rheeden found a streaking Johnson down the left sideline, beating the defense and slipping a shot into the left corner, extending the Evangels' advantage to seven.

The scoring spurt continued for the Evangels, adding yet another goal just over a minute later off a penalty kick goal by Simon Wieschemann. On the play leading up to it, Pero Mikulic was fouled by the Oklahoma Baptist goalkeeper off a breakaway on the left side of the goal box. On the free attempt, Wieschemann fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net, out of the reach of the diving keeper.

The Evangels added one more for good measure in the 83rd minute. On the final goal score of the afternoon, Dominik Tajak was able to find an open Diego Romero on the left side who centered a pass to Rodrigo Albuquerque. The sophomore forward was able to dribble around a couple OBU defenders and fire a shot in the bottom left corner to extend the edge to 9-nil.

In the victory, MACU finished with a season-high 27 shots with a season-best 18 being on-target. Sophomore goalkeeper Austen Parker moved to 6-1 as the Evangel starter, pitching his fourth shutout of the season and finishing with five saves.

With the nine-goal effort, the Evangels tied the third-best goal scoring mark in a single match in program history, matching MACU's 9-3 win at Nebraska Christian on Oct. 19, 2006.

Mid-America Christian will look to carry the momentum into SAC play on Friday as the Evangels will host the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
