Men’s Soccer Takes Home Pair of Player of the Week Awards

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mid-America Christian men's soccer team was well represented in both the NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week and Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards as junior forward Rodrigo Albuquerque was named the NCCAA Division I Offensive Player of the Week while senior goalkeeper Juan Cediel took home the SAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

A 5-8 forward from Recife, Brazil, Albuquerque earned the NCCAA offensive award in back-to-back weeks after scoring MACU's game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Arizona Christian on Thursday. Albuquerque added an assist for good measure on Dante Luz's second half insurance goal to give him three points for the match.

So far this season, Albuquerque leads the team in all of the Evangels offensive statistical categories, including: goals (4), assists (2), points (10), shots (20), shots on-goal (10) and game-winning goals (3). Currently, Albuquerque is the only player lead both the NAIA and the NCCAA in game-winners.

On the defensive side of the field, Cediel played one of his best games in goal so far in the early season in the win over the Firestorm. Cediel pitched his second shutout with the Evangels while making three saves, including a very impressive leaping save with just over three minutes left that kept the clean sheet intact.

Through three matches this season, Cediel has posted a 3-0 record and is giving up a 0.33 goals against average while making seven saves for a .875 save percentage. Cediel leads the Sooner Athletic Conference in goals against average while ranking eighth in the NAIA.

Mid-America Christian will look to keep its winning streak intact on Saturday, Oct. 17 as the Evangels will head to Wichita, Kansas for a neutral site matchup with Manhattan Christian (Kan.). Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Stryker Sports Complex.
