OKLAHOMA CITY – In helping lead the MACU men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday, senior defender Simon Wieschemann collected his second consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday.
Facing a solid 4-2 Bruins team that is averaging 2.6 goals on 12.6 shots and seven shots on-goal per game, the Evangels found themselves in trouble when Bellevue scored the go-ahead goal in just the second minute of the match.
However, the Evangels defense was able to clamp down on the Bruins after that play, allowing BU to attempt only seven shots, putting three on-target over the final 88 minutes before rallying with a pair of second half goals to complete the comeback victory.
Wieschemann, a 6-1 defender from Frankfurt, Germany, made some fantastic hustle plays in the MACU backfield that frustrated a Bruins attack that featured Inaki Aldao, one of the top strikers in the NAIA.
Through two games thus far this season, the Evangels defense has only given up one goal on 13 shots with just five shots landing on-target.
Wieschemann was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week last week after helping lead Mid-America Christian to a 4-0 shutout victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana in the team's season-opener on Sept. 26.
The Evangels will be back in-action on Thursday, Oct. 8 as MACU will host Arizona Christian for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Evangel Field.
