GREENVILLE, S.C. – Between Mid-America Christian's three fall sports teams, 22 student-athletes were selected as National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the league office.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a junior by academic standing and have completed at least one semester at his or her current institution while maintaining a 3.40 cumulative grade-point-average or higher.
The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team placed 11 student-athletes on the esteemed list, the most of any NCCAA Division I institution in the country. The Evangels had three players finish with a 4.0 GPA, including Rachael Bond, Marga Franco and Kyleigh Gibson.
The MACU men's soccer team also boasted the most NCCAA Scholar-Athletes of all Division I programs, landing nine on this year's list. Simon Wieschemann, now a graduate player on the MACU men's soccer team earned his Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration and Ethics with an emphasis in Sports Management this spring and is currently pursuing his MBA.
The Evangels had two volleyball players earn Scholar-Athlete honors, including senior outside hitter Hanna Foecker and junior defensive specialist Kaylie Walker. Foecker is currently pursing multiple program records and is just 17 kills away from cracking into the top five for career kills during the NAIA era (2007-present).
The Mid-America Christian volleyball team will be competing at the NCCAA National Championships from Thursday, Nov. 16 to Saturday, Nov. 18. Meanwhile, the Evangels soccer programs will return to action in the spring, opening the second half of the split 2020-21 campaign with a non-conference home match against Houston-Victoria at Evangel Field on Friday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
