OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian men's soccer team recently announced its 2020 class as the Evangels will have 40 incoming student-athletes compete for the program, 20 of which will play for the varsity team as well as 20 more that will compete for the reserve team in its inaugural season.
The MACU men's soccer program will be looking to build upon its most successful season in program history. In 2019, the Evangels broke multiple records, including setting the single-season wins record after going 20-3-1 and winning their first ever NCCAA National Championship.
After staving off Piedmont International (N.C.) in the opening game of pool play at the national tournament, the Evangels dominated the rest of the way by pitching three consecutive shutouts, including a 5-0 victory over Grace (Ind.) in the NCCAA Championship game on Dec. 7 at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
On top of establishing the wins record, MACU also broke nearly every single NAIA era team statistical record, including: goals scored (94), assists (81), points (267), shots (460), shots on-goal (235), goals allowed average (0.9) and shutouts (13).
Highlighting the class will be a stellar goalkeeper in Pablo Cubas. The Richland College transfer helped guide the Ducks to back-to-back NJCAA Division III National Championships while earning a pair of All-American honors.
Last season, Cubas conceded just nine goals in 19 games for a 0.5 goals allowed average while also making 52 saves on a .852 save percentage. The 5-11 keeper from Gran Caneria, Spain also pitched 10 shutouts for the Ducks last season.
One of four Patrick Henry Community College transfers to join MACU in 2020, Mateus Pasquantonio will be looking to bring a spark to the MACU attack. The 5-10 midfielder from Sao Paulo, Brazil led the Patriots with 14 goals to go with eight assists for a squad-best 36 points.
MACU also picked up another strong striker from Patrick Henry with the addition of Dante Luz. A season ago, the 5-7 forward from Rio de Janiero, Brazil dished out a team-best 12 assists and scored 10 goals to help guide the Patriots to a 12-4 record as well as an appearance in the NJCAA Division I Region X Semifinals.
The Evangels were able to land another strong scorer from the west coast with the signing of Mason Gonzalez. The junior forward transfer from Fresno City College was the Rams leading scorer last season with 10 goals. The Fresno, California native was able to help propel FCC to an 18-1-7 record and a victory over Mt. San Antonio for the CCCAA Championship.
MACU continues to add depth to its backline with Edward Alderson coming to the program for 2020. The 6-1 defender from London, England competed for Angelina College last season, seeing action in 14 matches and making 13 starts for the Roadrunners during his freshman campaign.
The Evangels will be adding another strong midfielder to its roster with Luan Cesar joining the squad. The 5-8 Rio de Janiero product scored six goals and dished out seven assists for Iowa Lakes Community College last season, pushing the Lakers to a 13-4-1 record and an appearance in the NJCAA Region XI Championship match.
Mid-America Christian will also be bringing in some young talent with the signing of Adrian Heinle. The freshman forward from Stuttgart, Germany competed for TV Oeffingen, where he scored 10 career goals, including six during his senior campaign.
Rounding out the MACU signees is a Canadian midfielder in Mandela Singh-Sharpe. The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native competed for the University of Guelph during his freshman campaign, where he saw action in 12 matches for the Griffons.
