OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off a 4-0 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana in its season-opener on Saturday, the Mid-America Christian men's soccer team swept the Sooner Athletic Conference weekly awards as junior forward Rodrigo Albuquerque earned the offensive honor and senior defender Simon Wieschemann claimed the defensive accolade on Monday.

A native of Recife, Brazil, Albuquerque continued to be the offensive sparkplug of the Evangels attack as matched a career-high five points off a pair of goals and an assist in the victory over the Eagles. Albuquerque pushed across the game-winner just 21 seconds into the match when he was able to steal the ball on the left side of the field and make a break before slipping his shot in just past the keeper inside the left post to make it a 1-0 game.

After scoring 15 goals a season ago, it was Albuquerque's fifth multi-goal match with the Evangels with his last coming in a 6-3 win over Southwestern Christian in the NCCAA Central Region Semifinal last season on Nov. 22, 2019.

A four-year starter on MACU's back line, Wieschemann continued to be the stalwart of the defense as the Evangels pitched a shutout to open the season. Not only did the MACU defense allow only five shots in the entire contest, but the team limited only one of those shots to be on-target.

The defense as a unit played stellar considering the competition, as Texas A&M-Texarkana was coming off a 2019 season that saw the team average 2.9 goals on 13.6 shot attempts per game.

Mid-America Christian will take the Evangel Field pitch once again on Saturday, Oct. 3 as the Evangels will host Bellevue (Neb.) for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
