Late Goals by Luan Cesar, Cesar Ramirez Guide No. 3 Men’s Soccer Past Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, TexasLuan Cesar put through the equalizer just 27 seconds prior to Cesar Ramirez following through with his second straight game-winner during the 74th minute to lead the No. 3 Mid-America Christian men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wayland Baptist at J.V. Hilliard Field on Tuesday night.

  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian got the first opportunity on-goal in the eighth minute, but WBU's Ilkkan Sahin made a diving stop on Rodrigo Albuquerque's shot before Evangels goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel made a diving save of his own in the 17th minute to keep it to a scoreless tie.
    • The Pioneers limited the Evangels to only one more shot on-goal the remainder of the half, but managed to stop Albuquerque's second shot on-frame in the 33rd minute.
    • Wayland Baptist had the last chance to take the lead heading into the half, but Hector Romero's shot from the middle of the box glanced off the left post to keep it to a scoreless tie at the halftime break.

    • The Evangels made a critical mistake to start the second half when Wayland Baptist broke it down the right side and Leonardo Amaral's cross toward the left post was accidentally deflected in by the MACU defense for an own goal, giving the Pioneers the 1-0 advantage.
    • MACU's first real great chance at an equalizer came after a foul was called when Adrian Heinle was tripped up just outside of the 18-yard box in the 70th minute. Rodrigo Ferreira made a tremendous free kick that got through the wall on the right side of the box, but Sahin made a phenomenal leaping save to keep the Evangels off the board.
    • In the 74th minute, the Evangels were finally able to break through as Luan Cesar netted the equalizer off the assist from Mandela Singh-Sharpe, bringing it to a 1-1 game.
    • Just 27 seconds later, Cesar Ramirez made a tremendous play to beat his defender and slipped a shot past the Pioneers keeper to give MACU the 2-1 advantage.
    • Wayland Baptist had two late chances with just under two minutes to go when a foul was called on the Evangels from about 25 yards out on the left side, but MACU keeper Jeremi Abonnel made a great play by going into the crowd and punching the free kick cross out of the box. The Pioneers had one more chance off a corner kick with 37 seconds left, but WBU's Chris Moses sent a header high off the corner to ultimately seal the 2-1 victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • While Mid-America Christian held a slim 14-11 shot advantage, the Evangels were far more efficient on placing on-target strikes, putting seven on-goal to just two for the Pioneers.
  • By scoring his seventh goal of the season, Luan Cesar moved alone into second on the team in total goals, sitting just two back of team-leader Rodrigo Albuquerque.
  • Cesar Ramirez scored his third game-winning goal in the last five games and his second consecutive after turning in the winner in a 3-2 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday. Ramirez has netted four goals so far in the 2021 campaign and is second on the team in total points with 16.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel improved to 14-0 on the season, moving him just six back of Austen Parker's single season goalkeepers record of 20 notched during the 2019 NCCAA National Championship campaign.
  • The Evangels won their fifth consecutive match by one goal, completing their third comeback victory during that stretch.
  • Mid-America Christian defeated Wayland Baptist by a 2-1 score for the fourth consecutive time. Since getting a 2-1 victory over the Pioneers in the SAC Semifinal on Nov. 6, 2018, the Evangels followed it with 2-1 results on Oct. 10, 2019 in Plainview once again before a home victory on Mar. 6, 2021.
  • With the win, the Evangels are now the only team in the Sooner Athletic Conference with an unblemished league mark, notching 18 points with their 6-0 SAC record.  The Evangels improved to 14-0 overall on the season, becoming the first team in the NAIA to reach 14 victories. Wayland Baptist fell to 7-4-2 overall and 3-1-2 against SAC competition.

  • Mid-America Christian will now prepare for its final regular season road game as the Evangels will travel to Siloam Springs, Ark. on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with John Brown.
