Men’s Soccer Sweeps SAC Player of the Week Honors

OKLAHOMA CITY – After leading the No. 7 Mid-America Christian men's soccer program to a pair of victories against NAIA Top 25 teams, the Evangels swept the Sooner Athletic Conference weekly awards as Rodrigo Albuquerque claimed the Offensive Player of the Week award while Emanuele Grumo was tabbed with the defensive honor on Monday.

A senior forward from Recife, Brazil, Albuquerque was brilliant on the pitch last week, scoring four goals and adding an assist for nine total points.

In the win at No. 16 Georgia Gwinnett on Sept. 6, Albuquerque spearheaded a comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit, scoring MACU's first goal in the second half during the 57th minute before pushing across the game-winner with just 3:25 remaining in the match, his first of winner the season.

Albuquerque followed it up with a five-point effort against No. 22 Lyon (Ark.) on Saturday, netting MACU's lone goal in the first half and added one more for insurance in the second after recording the assist on Ricardo Ferreira's game-winner in the 50th minute.

For the 2020 SAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, it was the fourth time in his three seasons at MACU he earned the SAC Offensive Player of the Week. Albuquerque also garnered the NCCAA Offensive Student Athlete of the Week honor, collecting that accolade for the fifth time in his career.

On the flip side of the field, the Evangels have found stellar play out of Grumo, a freshman defender from Brugherio, Italy.

Against two nationally-ranked opponents, Grumo helped lead the defense to allow just 1.5 goals on 7.0 shots and 4.0 shots on-goal per game. The Evangels held the 16th-ranked Grizzlies to a season-low eight shots while keeping the 22nd-ranked Scots to just six shots, including a season-low two shots on-goal.

The last time MACU swept the offensive and defensive awards, it came in Week 15 of the split 2020-21 campaign when Mason Gonzalez (offensive) and Sven van den Oever (defensive) collected the honors following the team's 3-1 win over Science & Arts in the SAC Semifinal and SAC Championship victory over Central Christian in a 3-0 shootout after playing to a 0-0 draw.

Mid-America Christian will be back in-action tonight as the Evangels will take on Sterling at 7:30 p.m. at the Mike & Helen Dill Soccer Field.
