OKLAHOMA CITY – For the second time this season, the No. 5 Mid-America Christian men's soccer team swept both the Sooner Athletic Conference weekly awards as junior forward Jack Price earned the offensive accolade and senior defender Dejue Johnson collected the defensive honor on Monday.
Price and Johnson helped lead the Evangels to their fourth win against an opponent ranked in the NAIA Top 25 on Saturday, as MACU came away with a 3-1 victory over No. 22 Morningside (Iowa) at the Mike & Helen Dill Soccer Field.
Competing in just his fourth match with the Evangels, Price scored his first game-winning goal in the 68th minute and finished the match with three points after dishing out an assist on Adrian Heinle's go-ahead goal in the first half.
So far this season, the forward from London, England has netted three goals and dished out two assists for eight points, the fourth-highest goal and point totals on the team this season.
Johnson, the two-time Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year is no stranger to garnering player of the week honors as he is taking home his second conference weekly award this season and the fourth in his three-year career with the Evangels.
A defender from Linstead, Jamaica, Johnson helped guide the MACU defense facing a Morningside attack that came into the match averaging 3.43 goals on 14.3 shots per game to just one goal on five shots, the Mustangs' second-lowest shot output of the season.
Mid-America Christian has been highly recognized by the conference so far this season, earning four of the six offensive awards (Mason Gonzalez, Week 2; Rodrigo Albuquerque, Week 4 & 5) and three of the four defensive awards (Dejue Johnson, Week 3; Emanuele Grumo, Week 4).
The Evangels concluded non-conference play with an unblemished 8-0 record while picking up four wins against teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25.
MACU will officially kick off Sooner Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 28 as the Evangels will head uptown to face Oklahoma City for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Brian Harvey Field.
