No. 1 Men’s Soccer Eliminates Eagles, Advances to Fourth-Straight SAC Championship Match

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 1 MACU men's soccer team will be competing for its fourth-straight Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title after the Evangels defeated rival Southwestern Christian 1-0 in the SAC Semifinal at the Dill Soccer Field on Monday night.

SCORING SUMMARY MATCH SUMMARY
  • Scoring opportunities were heavily limited in the first 27 minutes as MACU's only shot on-goal came on a long free kick by Yasha Schaerer that was easily saved while SCU's only chance came in the 25th minute when Andre Lopes got free down the right side on a through-ball, but his one-timer toward the right post was softly struck and easily saved by Claudio Fuentealba.
  • In the 28th minute, the only scoring play reared its head. After Charlie Betts tackled the ball away from an SCU midfielder and took a long shot that was deflected off an SCU defender and out the left side, setting up a corner kick.
  • On the ensuing corner, Schaerer sent an in-swinging strike toward the middle of the box before Sebastian Rebolledo redirected a shot into the lower right side, setting the score to 1-nil.
  • Neither team was able to put a shot on over the remainder of the half as the Evangels took their 1-0 advantage into the break.
  • Francois Geris-Rey had the first chance for Mid-America Christian (16-0-3) in the second half during the 52nd minute when he got free through the midfield and struck a 25-yarder roller toward the right side that was easily saved by Matej Hron.
  • After getting just one shot on-goal through the first 74 minutes, Southwestern Christian (7-10-1) finally started to find a late offensive rhythm a Kershon Carter got a 10-yard strike with a tough angle from the far-left side batted down easily by Fuentealba in the 75th minute before easily snaring an overly ambitious long strike by Richard Perez from the left side toward the top right in the 78th minute.
  • The Eagles last chance at an equalizer came with just 4:04 left when a handball call set SCU up with a 35-yard free kick that Daniel Valdez rifled toward the top left side. However, Fuentealba was able to knock the shot down before falling on it to keep the shutout intact.
  • Mid-America Christian had one last chance to add some late insurance when Fuentealba struck a long line drive kick that got past the entire defensive line and was run down by Jack Price. With a one-on-one with the keeper, the SAC Offensive Player of the Year had his stutter step shot toward the left side just barely deflected by Hron to force a time-wasting corner.
MATCH NOTES
  • Even though Mid-America Christian managed to outshoot Southwestern Christian 21-8, opportunities on-goal were few and far between for both teams as the Evangels held just a 5-4 edge in shots on-goal.
  • The goal for Sebastian Rebolledo marked his first career goal with the Evangels while the assist for Yasha Schaerer was his team-leading sixth of the season.
  • Jack Price led MACU's offensive efforts with five shots and two of the Evangels' five on-target shots.
  • Claudio Fuentealba improved to 14-0-2 in-goal for the Evangels this season, recording four saves for his eighth clean sheet of the year.
  • Over the last four SAC Tournaments, MACU pitched its ninth shutout in 11 matches and have only conceded two goals in the conference tournament since 2020.
  • The Evangels have now won five straight against Southwestern Christian since the 2021 season.
