OKLAHOMA CITY – In helping lead the MACU men's soccer program to be one of the best in the NAIA over the last five years, the Evangels are proud to announce that James Roberson is being elevated to the program's Associate Head Coach.
Assuming the role under new MACU head coach Aaron Hoxie, Roberson has served as an assistant coach for the Evangels since 2019. During that time span, the Evangels have amassed an astounding 90-10-11 (.860) overall record and a 36-2-6 (.886) record in Sooner Athletic Conference, winning three-straight SAC regular season titles and four consecutive SAC Tournament Championships on-top of winning the 2019 NCCAA Division I National Championship.
"I am honored to be stepping into the role as associate head coach here at MACU," stated Roberson. "Being a part of the program since 2019, I have been involved in many fantastic moments and want to continue helping bring success to the program on-and-off the field. I want to thank the administration for giving me the opportunity to serve such an integral part in this program."
The Evangels are coming off one of their best seasons yet in 2023 as MACU notched its first ever undefeated season, going 17-0-4, including 8-0-1 against SAC competition and won the SAC Tournament title on Nov. 9 at the Dill Soccer Field with a 3-1 victory over Science & Arts.
As a result of its great season, Mid-America Christian qualified for the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the fourth-straight year while also hosting their second consecutive NAIA Tournament First and Second Round. The Evangels were also touted as the longest tenured No. 1 team in the NAIA as MACU held the top spot in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll for an astounding eight weeks in a row.
"James is a cornerstone of the MACU men's soccer program," stated MACU Athletic Director Marcus Moeller. "I am so thankful for his desire to stay and continue to pour into the lives of our players. His dynamic leadership and servant heart make him an integral part of our athletic department. This was a no-brainer promotion and I look forward to continuing to watch his growth as a person and coach."
The Evangels will open their 2024 season against some big-time competition as MACU will head to Indiana to play Bethel University, the 2022 NAIA National Champions on August 22.
