No. 17 Men’s Soccer Hits Road for Pair of Tough Matches at Benedictine, No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 17 MACU Men's Soccer program will be looking forward to a pair of challenging road matches up in Kansas this week as the Evangels will square off against Benedictine at 6 p.m. on Aug. 28 before traversing to Olathe for a 3:30 pm contest against No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday.

  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian managed to overcome some tough adversity to open the season last week as the Evangels came away with a 0-0 draw at No. 13 LSU Shreveport on Aug. 21 before returning home to pull out a 2-1 win over McPherson last Saturday.
    • In both matches, the Evangels had to play shorthanded during certain stretches of the game. In the draw at the Pilots, a double-yellow red booking for freshman centerback forced the Evangels to play down a man for the final 5:44. MACU faced an even bigger uphill climb against the Bulldogs as a straight red issued to Diego Sano forced MACU to play down to 10 men for 73 minutes of the match before another red assessed to Jair Estrada in the 78th minute forced MACU down to nine men over the final 12 minutes.
    • Despite being down a man for most of the match, the Evangels still managed to net two goals in the 10-men situation as Federico Palacios scored MACU's first goal of the season in the 25th minute before Ryan Jeanfreau scored the game-winner early in the 59th minute.
    • Due to his excellent work in-goal, senior goalkeeper Alvaro Morera was award the Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and the NCCAA Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. Between the two stellar matches in net, Morera allowed only one shorthanded goal for a 0.50 goals allowed average and tallied 11 saves for a .917 save percentage.

    • Benedictine opened its 2025 campaign on the road last Thursday as the Ravens pulled out a 3-1 victory at Friends.
    • In that win, three different BC players found the back of the net in Kody Argaez and Feliipe Vargas while Fabian Viquez's goal in the 59th minute proved to be the game-winner.
    • While both the Ravens and Falcons were evenly matched with Friends holding a slight 9-8 shot advantage and both teams put five shots on-frame, the Ravens were much more effective at finding the back of the net by scoring on 37.5 percent of its shot attempts to just 11.1 percent for Friends.
    • Thursday night's meeting will mark only the second all-time between the Evangels and Ravens. The two squads first met up at the Dill Soccer Field last year on Aug. 30 as MACU pulled out a thrilling 1-0 victory on Pietro Musso's game-winning goal as time expired at the end of regulation.

    • MidAmerica Nazarene opened its 2025 season with a 1-0 road win against MACU's Sooner Athletic Conference rival, John Brown on Aug. 21 before heading down to NCAA D-II Mississippi College and grinding out a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Aug. 23.
    • Junior defender Tom Chartier and Antonio Mugica have netted the Pioneers lone two goals of the season thus far as Mugica's 40th-minute score proved to be the game-winner against the Golden Eagles and Chartier's early second half goal in the 46th minute forced the draw at MCU after conceding an own goal in the 22nd minute.
    • The MNU defense has been lock down so far through their first two matches of the year as it only allowed two shots on-goal in the win at John Brown and six shots on-goal against the Choctaws.
    • Saturday's matchup will mark the fourth ever meeting between the Evangels and Pioneers. Even though MNU won the first two meetings by a score of 2-0 on Aug. 22, 2015 and 1-0 on Sept. 3, 2022, MACU forced a thriller draw in their last meeting on Sept. 4, 2023 when Federico Palacios made an incredible made an incredible 35-yard strike from the right side to the top left corner with 25 seconds left to seal the 2-2 result.
