Men’s Soccer Makes Way to Wayland Baptist for Second SAC Match

OKLAHOMA CITY – After opening Sooner Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at Oklahoma City on Saturday, the MACU Men's Soccer team will continue seeking its first SAC win on the road as the Evangels head to Plainview, Texas for a 6:30 p.m. match at Wayland Baptist.

SEASON REPORT
  • Record: 2-5-3 (0-0-1 SAC)
  • Last Match: Tied at (RV) Oklahoma City – 2-2 – Sept. 27, 2025 – Oklahoma City (Brian Harvey Field)
  • Stat Leaders:
  • Team Notes:
    • After trailing twice by a score of 1-0 at the half and 2-1 with just under eight minutes to go in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener at Oklahoma City on Saturday night, Mid-America Christian rallied back to force a 2-2 draw when Federico Palacios scored a sensational 25-yard strike with 2:58 remaining in the match.
    • Palacios has had a penchant for scoring clutch goals in his MACU career. His first career goal came during the 2023 campaign when he netted an incredible game-tying goal with 24 seconds left in a 2-2 draw at No. 15 MidAmerica Nazarene on Sept. 4, 2023. He also netted the game-tying goal with 10:45 to go in a 2-1 win over William Woods on Sept. 21, 2024.
    • In a season where goals have been tough to come by, MACU has posted better results whenever it has been able to score two or more goals in a game this season. The Evangels own a 2-1-1 record in matches where they score a pair with the lone loss being a 3-2 defeat at No. 17 Keiser while being 0-4-2 in games where they score fewer than two.
    • The result was on the positive side for the Evangels as it puts them even with the Stars at one point on the SAC table after OCU won the SAC Tournament last year and finished third in the league standings at the conclusion of the regular season. The Evangels will enter a short stretch where it will not face teams ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll as eight of MACU's first 10 opponents are currently listed on the NAIA Coaches' Poll while another foe is a strong NCAA D-II Oklahoma Christian program.

  • Team Notes:
    • Wayland Baptist opened SAC play on the road on Saturday as the Pioneers battled out a 3-2 victory at Texas Wesleyan to put the Pioneers at the top of the league table after one match.
    • Through their first six matches, the Pioneers are the SAC's best scoring offense, averaging 3.17 goals per game while efficiently scoring on 20.9 percent of their shot attempts. However, despite WBU's strong offensive attack, the Pioneers have been suspect on the defensive end, allowing a league-worst 2.73 goals per contest while allowing at least one goal in each of their first six games and two or more goals in four of those contests.
    • The WBU attack features one of the SAC's best attackers in senior forward Jamol Williams, who has netted a conference-high eight goals and an assist for the SAC-most 17 points. The Pioneers also feature the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week, who was involved in all three of WBU's goals last week at TXWES with a pair of goals and an assist.
    • On the defensive side, goalkeeper Alex Neri has started all but one of WBU's matches this year, posting a 4-1 record in-goal, but is allowing 2.29 goals per game. Senior center-back Aaron Debus has logged a team-high 521 minutes while midfielder Alvaro Pineda is the only other WBU player to log more than 500 minutes at 512.
    • After Wayland Baptist won eight of the first 11 meetings from 2009-17, Mid-America Christian has dominated the recent series by winning 10 in a row, including a pair of 3-0 victories last year at the Dill Soccer Field with the last coming in the SAC Quarterfinal on Nov. 9. The last time the two teams played in Plainview, the Evangels won a downright thriller as Charlie Betts scored the game-winning long distance goal with three seconds left to secure a 2-1 victory on Oct. 17, 2023.
