KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Following his record-breaking performance at the Missouri Southern Stampede last weekend, MACU Men's Cross Country runner Mohamed Guled was named the NAIA Runner of the Week, becoming the first Evangel to receive the honor.
Guled is garnering the honor after a busy week where he was named the USTFCCCA NAIA Men's Athlete of the Week on Monday and notching his second Sooner Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in three weeks on Tuesday.
So far through two meets in the fall season, Guled has broken two course records, first breaking Rogers State's Distance After Dark four-mile record at the Mohawk Sports Complex in Tulsa, Okla. on Sept. 3 before then surpassing the Missouri Southern Stampede 8k record at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course in Joplin, Mo. on Sept. 19.
In the Southern Stampede, Guled ran an incredible 23:00.6, making it not only the fastest time in the NAIA, but also the third-fastest time at any level of collegiate competition, including: NCAA, NJCAA, and NCCAA.
The mark also set a new personal-best for the United Arab Emirates native, who previously posted a career-best of 23:07.0 when he competed at the NCAA D-I level at Utah Valley, a result that won the WAC Championship. Guled is currently one of only two runners in the NAIA to post a time under 24 minutes and his mark is the best in the nation by 54 seconds.
Guled has easily surpassed MACU's four-mile and 8k records in each of the last three weeks, as his 19:12.7 not only broke the Evangels' four-mile record by more than a minute-and-a-half, but that also set the fastest mark in NAIA by more than a minute.
The MACU Men's Cross Country team will have an extended break before it once again competes at the Old Glory Gallop hosted by Dallas Baptist at the Athletic Performance Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas on Oct. 17.
