Marcus Moeller is entering his 11th year as Athletic Director at Mid-America Christian University for the 2025-26 athletic year.
During his 10th year at the helm of the MACU Athletics programs during the 2024-25 academic year, the Evangels continued to put together unprecedented success as Mid-America Christian became the first two-time recipient of the Sooner Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup.
Over the course of the year, the Evangels captured a pair of SAC Championships with the men's soccer team notching its fourth-straight SAC title while the women's soccer team captured a share of its first SAC Championship. MACU had incredible success in all of its sports as the Evangels finished in the top three of their respective conference standings in seven of its sports while five teams qualified for the NAIA Tournament (baseball, men's basketball, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's soccer) and five teams qualified for the NCCAA Tournament (men's cross country, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, volleyball, women's cross country).
Following the 2023-24 academic year, the Evangels won the SAC Commissioner's Cup for the first time in program history, an award presented to the most successful athletic program in the conference over the academic year.
Over the course of the 2023-24 season, Mid-America Christian won two SAC regular season championships in men's soccer and baseball with each program also winning the SAC Tournament Championship while overall, eight of MACU's nine varsity programs finished in the top four of their respective SAC standings. The MACU men's soccer program completed its first undefeated season in program history, finishing the year with a 17-0-4 overall record while going 8-0-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Evangels won their fourth consecutive SAC Tournament title with a 3-1 victory over Science & Arts at the Dill Soccer Field on Nov. 9. The MACU baseball program also won its first ever SAC regular season and tournament titles, closing out the year with a program record in wins with a 41-13 overall record while finishing with a 20-4 record in league play. The Evangels captured their first SAC Tournament title after defeating Oklahoma City by a score of 12-6 at Bill Simith Ballpark in Chickasha, Oklahoma on May 7.
On the whole, eight of MACU's nine varsity programs qualified for postseason competition with five programs (men's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball and softball) qualifying to the NAIA National Tournament and three programs (volleyball, women's soccer and men's cross country) qualifying for the NCCAA National Tournament while the baseball and softball programs each competed in their first ever NAIA Tournaments. Mid-America Christian was a hot bed for hosting postseason competition as well as the Evangels hosted the NAIA Men's Soccer First and Second Round for the second-straight year, hosted the NCCAA Central Region volleyball tournament for the first time since becoming a Division I program in 2007 and also hosted SAC Tournament First Round games in men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball.
On-top of MACU's postseason success, the Evangels added three sports prior to the start of the 2023-24 season with the re-introductions of the men's and women's cross country programs while the previously established MACU club sport esports being added as an athletic program in 2023. In its first year as a MACU Athletics program, esports won a pair of NACE Starleague National Championships with Rocket League winning its conference and tournament titles during the fall and Overwatch 2 team winning its conference and tournament championships in the spring.
Following the 2022-23 athletic season, Moeller was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year after the MACU Athletics programs put together a sensational year both academically and athletically. Over the course of the year, the MACU Athletics programs reached new heights as the men's soccer program achieved its first No. 1 ranking in the NAIA and became just the second SAC institution to be the top-ranked team nationally, finishing the season with a 19-1-2 overall record while also hosting the program's first ever NAIA Tournament Opening Round. The women's basketball program joined the men's soccer program in qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament after closing out the year with a 23-6 overall record and the baseball program won its first ever NCCAA World Series after defeating Southwestern Christian 3-2 in walk-off fashion in 10 innings on May 23. Overall, five of MACU's seven athletic programs qualified for either NAIA or NCCAA postseason play as both the volleyball and softball programs finished as semifinalists in their respective NCCAA National Championship tournaments.
On-top of hosting the NAIA Men's Soccer Opening Round, Mid-America Christian was the host of multiple championship events, including the 2023 SAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championships for the second straight year while also hosting the SAC Men's Soccer Championship for the third straight year.
While serving as MACU's Athletic Director, Moeller also completed his fourth year as the Chair of the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament Selection Committee while also becoming the SAC representative for the NAIA National Administrative Council (NAC) as well as serves as the AD liason and NAC representative for the NAIA Senior Woman Leader (SWL) board.
Moeller's first year as AD was a historic one, featuring the men's basketball team capturing their first NAIA National Championship and the softball program qualifying for the NCCAA World Series for the first time in school history. The women's soccer program also advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament for the second straight time in 2015-16.
Since that time, all seven of MACU's teams have made a total of 31 trips to national tournament competition. The women's basketball team made an NCCAA tournament appearance in 2017, and in 2017-18 five teams made trips to NCCAA championships - men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, softball and volleyball. The 2018 women's basketball team captured the school's third NCCAA National title with a 71-60 win over Concordia-Ann Arbor (Mich.). The 2018-19 season saw three more teams make a national tournament - including two teams advancing to the NAIA National Championships. Both the men's basketball and men's soccer teams made it to the round of 16 in the NAIA Championships, while the women's hoops squad won their second straight NCCAA title.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic putting a damper on winter and spring competition during the 2019-20 season, the Evangels locked up five more postseason berths. The men's soccer team captured the program's first ever NCCAA National Championship in a 5-0 win over Grace College on Dec. 7. All three of the fall sports teams participated in the NCCAA National Championships with the women's soccer team getting a 4-0 win over Erskine (S.C.) at the national meet while the MACU volleyball program made its first ever appearance in the NCCAA Division I National Championships and its first overall NCCAA National Championship appearance since 2004. Despite both national championships getting canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mid-America Christian men's basketball team locked up a No. 1 seed in the NAIA National Championship Tournament while the women's team secured its fourth consecutive bid for the NCCAA National Championships.
While the 2020-21 academic year provided several challenges due to the pandemic, Mid-America Christian's athletic programs under Moeller persevered and thrived. The MACU men's soccer team won its second ever Sooner Athletic Conference title and achieved its highest ranking in program history at No. 9 after picking up a pair of thrilling victories at the NAIA Opening Round to advance to the NAIA National Championships final site. The MACU volleyball team also advanced to its second straight NCCAA National Championships after putting together its winninest season since the program joined the NAIA and SAC in 2007. Both of MACU's basketball teams prospered as the the women's basketball team in a heavily impacted COVID-19 campaign won its first ever share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title and was selected to compete in its first ever NAIA National Championship Tournament. The men's basketball program also put together another stellar season that culminated in the Evangels advancing to compete in just their second ever SAC Championship game as well as earned its fifth bid to the NAIA National Tournament. MACU ended the year on the highest of notes as not only did the softball program put together its winningest season in program history, but closed out the year by winning the program's first ever NCCAA National Championship with a 3-2 victory over Concordia-Ann Arbor on May 20.
The 2021-22 season was a historic one for the MACU athletic programs as all seven of MACU's programs competed in either NAIA or NCCAA national postseason competition. The men's soccer program completed its winningest season in team history, finishing the year with a 19-1-1 overall record and competed in the NAIA Opening Round after winning both the SAC regular season and tournament titles, the first time the team had won both in the same season. The MACU women's basketball team also put together a season of the ages, finishing the year with a program-best 28-5 overall record and tallied the team's first ever NAIA Tournament win with a 76-64 victory over Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Mar. 11. The men's basketball team also notched its fourth straight bid to the NAIA tourney, closing out the year with a 20-13 overall record.
The 2021-22 campaign also featured four NCCAA National Championship Tournament bids as the MACU volleyball program put together its best season in the NAIA Era. The Evangels wrapped up the campaign with 30-9 overall record and narrowly missed winning the program's first ever Division I National Championship after finishing in the runner-up position at the NAIA National Championships on Dec. 4. The MACU softball program also put together another stellar postseason run, wrapping up a 35-23 year as a semifinalist at the NCCAA World Series after falling to eventual national champion Southwestern Assemblies of God on May 18. Under first year head coach Anthony Yousey, the MACU women's soccer program made its fifth national championship bid in the last eight seasons after defeating Central Christian 2-1 in the Central Region Championship on Nov. 19.
The success under Moeller's match hasn't been limited to the playing fields as MACU teams have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher for a given academic year a total of 45 times in his first eight years at the helm. The softball team has also posted the highest team GPA in their sport of any team in the SAC in each of the last five seasons since Moeller assumed the AD's role.
In addition, 72 MACU student-athletes earned a spot on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll in his first season, up from 39 honorees in the 2014-15 season. That number climbed to 75 in 2016-17, and it went up again to 91 in 2017-18 - a 133% increase under Moeller's leadership. The Evangels landed 85 on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2018-19 before recording a new record number in 2019-20 with 106 making the list. The Evangels reached triple digits for a second straight year in 2021-22 with 101 being honored. In 2022-23, MACU landed a program record 138 student-athletes on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
On top of his duties at Mid-America Christian, Moeller recently completed a four-year stint serving as the Coordinator of the NCCAA Division I Central Region as well as serves on the Conduct in Competition Committee for the Sooner Athletic Conference. Prior to being named the permanent AD, Moeller served as the Assistant A.D. from 2012-15 while also serving as the women's basketball head coach for the two seasons and guided the Lady Evangels to consecutive winning seasons that featured Ashlee Ferguson being named an NAIA All-American performer in both years.
In his first year at the helm, the Evangels had their most successful season since joining the NAIA at that point with 18 wins and a program-best of 11 victories in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
