OKLAHOMA CITY – It didn't take long for the Mid-America Christian women's basketball team to show off its offensive prowess as the Evangels recorded the program's single game scoring record in a 130-39 victory over Manhattan Christian College in their season opener at the Gaulke Activity Center on Friday night.
Senior forward Alexis Shannon led eight Mid-America Christian (1-0) players in double-figures scoring with 28 points, moving into sixth all-time in MACU's career scoring list. MACU newcomer Lexi Hernandez chipped in 17 points while Loralei Siliga and Jessica Fairley each poured in 16 points.
While Manhattan Christian (0-1) kept the game to within single digits late in the first quarter, the Evangels went on a big run in the final two minutes, outscoring the Thunder 10-2 over the final two minutes, capped off on an Avery Gregory buzzer-beating layup to take a 35-17 lead into the second period.
The Evangels defense was relentless in the second quarter, limiting MCC to just eight points on 25-percent shooting from the floor to take a commanding 67-25 lead into the halftime break.
MACU continued to pull away over the course of the third quarter, outscoring the Thunder 31-12 to hold a 98-37 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
The Evangels saved their best play for last in the fourth, as MACU held Manhattan Christian to just two points on 1-for-10 from the floor for a 32-2 scoring edge in the 10-minute period. Aaliyah Endsley's three-pointer with 2:06 remaining gave Mid-America Christian its program scoring record before closing out with the 130-39 victory.
The Mid-America Christian defense completely stifled the Thunder, limiting MCC to just a 10-of-43 (23.3 percent) shooting while forcing 32 turnovers, 27 of which came the way of the steal. On the offensive end, the Evangels shot a blistering 54-for-96 (56.3 percent) and converted on 12-of-32 (37.5 percent) from the three-point arc.
Along with Fairley's double-double with 16 points with a team-leading 14 rebounds and five steals, Sydney Wycoff put together a strong all-around game, tallying 11 points, seven rebounds, dishing out a team-high seven assists and four steals.
In their first games with the Evangels, Gregory and Anna Kash each poured in 11 points apiece while Rachel Tapps racked up 10 points in her MACU debut.
Mid-America Christian will have a week off to prepare for its next home matchup against Evangel University on Friday, Nov. 1. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. tip-off at the Gaulke Activity Center.
