MCPHERSON, Kan. – The No. 21 Mid-America Christian men's soccer team put together a stingy defensive game plan, limiting Central Christian to just one shot as the Evangels came away with a 2-0 victory on Saturday.
Allan Sorato put Mid-America Christian (9-1, 3-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) up early with a goal in the fourth minute and Simon Wieschemann added some insurance with his second goal of the season off a penalty kick in the 87th minute to seal the victory.
Sorato notched his fifth goal of the season when he received a left side cross from Endri Copa, punching it into the back of the net from right of goal for his first game-winner of the 2019 season.
That go-ahead goal would be a vital one for MACU as the Evangels offensive opportunities were limited by the Central Christian (4-5-1, 0-2 SAC) defense. MACU was held to just six shots with four being on-target in the first 45 minutes of regulation.
Mid-America Christian had a few additional opportunities in the second half, but the Evangels struggled to get a good look against the Central Christian defensive formation.
The Tigers defense got a little too aggressive in the 87th minute when a defender committed a foul inside the goal box, setting up the penalty kick for Wieschemann. The Frankfurt, Germany product had no problem finding the back of the net on the PK, placing it in the top right corner out of the reach of the Tigers' keeper.
Due to the Evangels strong possession game combined with the defensive tackling efforts, MACU outshot the Tigers 14-1 in the match with an 8-0 edge in shots on-goal.
Rodrigo Albuquerque led the Evangels offensive efforts with four shots, putting two on-goal while Dominik Tajak fired three shots with one being on-target.
Austen Parker improved his goalkeeping record to 9-1 on the season and by picking up his sixth shutout of the season, he moved into a tie for second in MACU history for the most shutouts in a season.
Mid-America Christian will return home next week for a pair of matches, starting with a non-conference meetup with Bacone College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday before returning to conference play against Southwestern Assemblies of God at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
