OKLAHOMA CITY – After completing the most successful run in Sooner Athletic Conference play in program history, the Mid-America Christian volleyball team had three student-athletes selected to the All-SAC Team announced by the conference office on Friday.
Junior outside hitter Hannah Focker was selected as the Sooner Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and named to the All-SAC Second Team, junior libero Maegan Plunk was also selected to the All-SAC Second Team and senior setter Alexa Bass received All-SAC Honorable Mention accolades.
It is the first time that at least two Evangels were selected to either the All-SAC First Team or Second Team since the 2016 season when Laurel Church was a First Team honoree and Camera Broadnax took home Second Team honors.
By being named the SAC Newcomer of the Year, Focker becomes the first Evangel in program history to receive one of the Sooner Athletic Conference's special awards. Focker ranked second in the SAC at 4.1 kills per set, fifth in total kills with 344 and sixth in the league in service aces per set at 0.4.
In her first season with the Evangels, the Sudlohn, Germany native put several dents in the MACU single match and single season record books. In her first match wearing a MACU uniform, Focker tied Christiane Smith's NAIA era single match kills record with 26 in a 3-2 loss to Red River Athletic Conference Champion Huston-Tillotson on Aug. 26. Focker shattered the record later in the season in a 3-2 win at Southwestern Christian on Oct. 19, laying down 30 kills, including the match-tying and match-winning kills against the Eagles.
As the Evangels prepare for the NCCAA Tournament, Focker holds several spots in MACU's single season record book. Focker is currently third in kills with 344, fifth in points with 392 and 10th in service aces with 36.
Competing in her second season at MACU, Plunk was honored as one of the top defensive players in the SAC. Plunk ranked second in the conference with 446 digs on a five digs per set ratio. Just like Focker, Plunk set several marks in the MACU single match and single season record books. The Rowlett, Texas native tied Broadnax for the third-most digs in a single match with 36 against Huston-Tillotson as well as tied the three-set match record with 30 digs against John Brown on Nov. 1.
Plunk currently holds the fourth-most digs in a single season during the NAIA era and his just 14 shy of tying Broadnax for third. Even though she is in just her second season, Plunk has been climbing the career record book as well, as she currently sits in fifth with 809 career digs with another collegiate season to go.
In her final season with the Evangels, Bass continued to her ascent up the MACU record books. Her 48-assist match against Southwestern Christian was the ninth-most in a single match in program history while setting a few season marks, tallying 642 for the eighth-most in a single season and the ninth-most service aces with 37.
The Argyle, Texas product also continues to climb up the career record books as well, rising to third all-time in assists with 1338 and fourth in service aces with 89, achieving both marks in just two seasons with the program.
Mid-America Christian will now await to see who they will face in the NCCAA Tournament, which the field will be revealed early next week.
