MACU Volleyball Drops First SAC Match Of Season At Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team struggled to sustain an attack against the No. 24 Oklahoma City in a battle of Sooner Athletic Conference unbeaten as the Evangels fell to the Stars 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-21) at Abe Lemon Arena on Saturday.

The Evangels could only muster 17 kills against a stingy Stars defense with freshman right side hitter Maddie Callicoat leading the offensive charge with five kills.

After conceding the first five points of the opening set, Mid-America Christian (5-4, 3-1 SAC) looked to get back in it by rattling off three straight. However, the Oklahoma City (10-1, 4-0 SAC) quickly pulled away be scoring nine of the next 10 points to extend its lead to 14-4. The Evangels couldn't muster enough offense to dig themselves out of the deficit, eventually dropping the set by a score of 25-10.

MACU was able to put up a better fight in the second set as they were able to keep within striking distance at 14-12 midway through. Unfortunately, the Stars were able to string together a strong 6-1 run to close out the set with a 25-17 win.

The third and final set was tightly contested that saw seven lead changes and eight ties, with the last being a service error that brought the set even at 20-all. However, Oklahoma City once again strung together a 5-1 run to thwart a potential Evangels comeback

Maegan Plunk finished with a team-high 17 digs and Alexa Bass finished with seven assists.

Mid-America Christian will look to get back on the winning track at home next week as the Evangels will host a pair of conference foes. MACU will take on Langston (Okla.) at 7 p.m. Thursday night before challenging Central Christian (Kan.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
