OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team had its four-match win streak snapped in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener as the Evangels fell 3-1 to No. 11 University of Science & Arts on Friday afternoon at Evangel Field.
Mid-America Christian (4-3, 0-1 SAC) was able to muster a small rally in the second half when Brooklyn Fink scored her first goal of the 2019 season on a long shot from 40 yards out off a free kick in the second half, but the Evangels comeback efforts fell short to undefeated Science & Arts (9-0, 1-0 SAC).
Even though the Evangels were able to survive an early onslaught of shots by the Drovers, USAO was able to break through with the first score of the match in the 21st minute as Thais Silva scored from point blank on a cross from the right side, putting MACU down 1-nil.
The Drovers had a couple other big scoring opportunities in the half, but USAO's leading scorer Emma Rice had a pair of free kick shots bounce off the crossbar in the 23rd and 37th minutes.
Despite getting outshot 17-0 in the half, the Evangels were able to limit Science & Arts to just one goal to trail 1-0 at the break.
Even with a player down for a majority of the second half after having a player escorted off on a red card in the 48th minute, the Drovers were able to carry their momentum throughout the second half. USAO extended its lead to two on a 55th minute goal by Sara Vijfhuisen followed by a 60th minute score by Rice off a penalty kick to put MACU down 3-0.
The Evangels were finally able to break through in the 71st minute. After MACU drew a yellow card foul just passed midfield line, Brooklyn Fink elected to fire a shot from about 40 yards out on the left side. Her shot took one bounce in front of the net and through the outstretched hands of the keeper to trim the deficit to 3-1.
However, MACU was only able to muster one more shot for the remainder of the match as USAO handed the Evangels their first loss in conference play this season.
After a tough opening half, the Evangels were able to outshoot USAO 10-8 in the second half. Brooklyn Fink led the attack with four shots with two on-target while her sister Bayleigh Fink took three shots and putting one on-goal.
Despite suffering the loss, Evangels goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt recorded a season-high nine saves.
Mid-America Christian will look for its first SAC win on the road next week as the Evangels will travel to Plainview, Texas on Tuesday, Oct. 1 for a 1 p.m. matchup with Wayland Baptist.
