SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team had its three-match win streak snapped at John Brown on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) to the Golden Eagles.
Hannah Focker led the Evangels with 10 kills and Elena Hadzhieva added eight, but Mid-America Christian (8-5, 6-2 Sooner Athletic Conference) couldn't slow down red-hot John Brown (13-3, 7-1 SAC), who hit for a .305 attack percentage for the match to come away with its seventh straight win.
MACU was able to keep things close early in the first set as the Evangels and Golden Eagles were able to evenly trade the first eight points. However, JBU was able to get some breathing room with five unasnwered to claim a 9-4 advantage.
The Evangels rallied back with five unanswered of their own, but John Brown pulled back in-front by scoring three straight and didn't concede the lead for the remainder of the set. MACU stayed within striking distance late on a Focker kill to make it 19-16, but the Golden Eagles closed out with a 6-3 run to take set one, 25-18.
After falling behind 6-3 in set two, the Evangels fought back with five straight thanks to three Focker kills as well as a pair from Alexa Bass to take the lead. However, JBU answered right back with five unanswered of their own to take the lead for good the rest of the set, pulling away with a 25-18 set two win.
Following a 5-0 start for John Brown in set three, MACU clawed its way back to tie the set at 10-all. The Evangels strung together a 4-0 streak during the rally that featured a pair of Focker kills and a Skylar Brower solo block.
The Evangels were able to keep it to within one at 13-12, but the Golden Eagles regained all of the momentum off a Lindsey Clark kill that sparked a 9-2 run to take their largest lead of the set. MACU scored three of the next four to trim into the deficit, but it was too little too late for the Evangels as JBU tallied the final two points to pull away with the 25-17 victory.
Bass finished with a team-high 13 assists while Maegan Plunk led the defensive backline with 11 digs.
Mid-America Christian will look to get back on the winning track on Friday, Oct. 4 as the Evangels will travel to Waxahachie, Texas to take on Southern Assemblies of God at 7 p.m. before heading to Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 1 p.m. match at Texas Wesleyan.
