Box Score STERLING, Kan. – Redshirt freshman forward Kyleigh Gibson recorded her second consecutive multi-goal game to lead the Mid-America Christian women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Sterling College Saturday afternoon.
Gibson scored a goal in each half while a stingy Mid-America Christian (2-2) defense limited the Warriors (1-2) to just six shots, four of which on-goal for the entire match.
Both teams struggled to get any sort of offensive traction early in the contest but MACU's Kelsey Henry was the first player to put a shot on-goal ten minutes in, but the attempt saved Warriors goalkeeper Ashtan Jackson to keep the Evangels off the board.
However, the Evangels were finally able to break through in the 29th minute when Gibson was able to track down a loose ball in the box and slip a shot past the keeper in the bottom right corner of the net off a breakaway to make it a 1-nil MACU advantage.
Gibson notched her second goal of the match in the 56th minute when she beat three defenders in the middle of the field off the dribble and slipped another shot past the keeper in the bottom left corner to make it a two goal advantage for the Evangels.
The Warriors were able to force some attempts on-goal late in the contest, but MACU goalkeeper Jennifer Starwalt was able to make some crucial saves to pick up the shutout.
The Evangels controlled the pace from start to finish, outshooting the Warriors by a 16-6 edge and an 8-4 margin in shots on-goal.
With her two-goal match, Gibson currently has a team-leading five goals on the season while Starwalt picked up her eighth career shutout to go with four saves.
Mid-America Christian will return home next week to start a three-match home stand. The Evangels will open with a Friday match against Bethel (Kan.), which is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Evangel Field.
