Gibson, Camacho Lead Evangels To Dominant Win Over Manhattan Christian

WICHITA, Kan. – Despite missing one of the top goal scorers in the NAIA in Liz Lozano, the Mid-America Christian women's soccer team got a pair of dominant performances out of Kyleigh Gibson with four goals and Paola Camacho with a goal and four assists as Evangels came away with a 12-0 victory over Manhattan Christian (Kan.) at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday.

SCORING SUMMARY
MATCH SUMMARY
  • Kyleigh Gibson got the scoring started in the 12th minute after a cross pass deflected off a Manhattan Christian defender, putting the open 7-yarder from the middle of the 18-yard box to bring the score to 1-nil.
  • Gibson added two more later in the half. With 17:11 on the clock, Gibson and Veronica Lopez Cordero had a give-and-go on the right side of the goal box as the Moore, Oklahoma native slipped a shot in just inside the right post. Gibson completed the hat trick in the 34th minute when Marga Franco found her breaking into the middle of the goal box on a run-out, sliding another shot into the right side of the goal to make it 3-0 at the half.
  • Less than three minutes into the second half, Gibson pushed across her fourth goal of the match on some strong passing from Kelsey Henry and Paola Camacho.
  • The Evangels netted five goals in a 10-minute stretch from the 57th minute to the 66th minute, two of which coming off the foot of Joanne Nakirya with Brooklyn Fink, Camacho and Franco notching goals as well to bring the score to 9-nil.
  • Veronica Lopez Cordero got in on the scoring with a pair of goals in the 71st and 85th minutes while Makayla Lein in her first action of the season scored a goal on a penalty kick with 17:05 remaining in the game.

MATCH NOTABLES
  • Mid-America Christian set multiple NAIA era (2008-present) record marks in the match. While the 12 goals tied the third-most in any match in program history, the Evangels scored them off of 11 total assists, which set a new program record. The 36 total points and 54 shots were each good enough for third in the books while the 28 on-goal shots rank as the fourth-best mark.
  • The Evangels did not allow Manhattan Christian to take a single shot in the entire match.
  • Kyleigh Gibson became the fourth Evangels player to score at least four goals in a match, setting a new career high. She joins Liz Lozano, who accomplished the feat twice this season with five goals Texas A&M-Texarkana and four at Bacone as well as Joanne Nakirya who finished with four against the Warriors as well.
  • Paola Camacho became just the second Evangels player in the NAIA era to record at least four assists in a single match. The Anzoategui, Venezuela product finished only behind MACU All-Decade player Chelsea Swisher, who tallied five back on Sept. 14, 2013 against Southwestern (Kan.).
  • Nakirya and Veronica Lopez Cordero each recorded their second multi-goal matches of the 2020-21 season with two goals apiece.

NEXT UP
  • Two of the top scoring teams in the NAIA will go head-to-head on Friday, Oct. 24 as the Evangels will host Science & Arts for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Evangel Field.
