MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The Mid-America Christian baseball team bounced back from its first back-to-back losses of the season with a dominant showing at former Sooner Athletic Conference rival Bacone College on Thursday and Friday, sweeping the Warriors in a four-game series, 27-5, 15-1, 3-0 and 3-0.
GAME ONE
In the first game of the opening doubleheader on Thursday, Mid-America Christian (11-4) scored the second-most runs in a single game in the NAIA era, just one behind the record of 28 set at Ozark Christian on Apr. 27, 2010.
The Evangels tallied their 27 runs on 26 hits and committed no errors while the Warriors scored five runs off five hits and finished with four errors.
Yan Ely Adames put together a monster game, slashing 3-for-6 while mashing a pair of home runs and a double to drive in eight runs and scored three times. Felix Martinez and Joshua Fernandez each drove in four with Martinez batting 1-for-3 with three runs scored and Fernandez hitting 2-for-4 with two runs.
MACU leadoff man Edgar Martinez was one of five Evangels with at least three hits, hitting 3-for-5 with a team-high five runs scored to go with an RBI.
Redshirt senior starter Keisy Portorreal went the distance for his third win of the season, giving up five earned runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
GAME TWO
Mid-America Christian (12-4) scored in all but one inning to thoroughly dominate Bacone in a 15-1 victory.
The Evangels tallied their 15 runs on 11 hits and once again played a complete game with no errors while the Warriors notched their one run on two hits and committed a pair of miscues.
In his return to the starting lineup, junior second baseman Andres Gonzalez scored a team-high three runs and drove in three RBIs while batting 1-for-3 with a walk from the plate. Junior catcher Oliver Fernandez also drove in three RBIs after slashing 2-for-2 to go with a pair of runs.
David Lechuga got the win after tossing three scoreless innings, conceding just one hit and one walk while striking out four. Christian Ballard also tossed three shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
GAME THREE
The Evangels faced a much stiffer challenge from Bacone in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader, but after holding a 1-0 edge through six innings, Mid-America Christian (13-4) scored two big insurance runs to come away with the 3-0 victory.
MACU scored its three runs on five hits and committed one error while the Warriors placed three hits in-play and also committed an error.
Pedro Reyes pitched six shutout innings for the second straight game, allowing just three hits and four walks while striking out a season-high 11 batters. Bernardo Moreno picked up his fourth save of the season after giving up one walk and striking out two in the seventh inning.
Edgar Martinez was the lone Evangel with more than one hit, batting 2-for-3 with a run while Adames slashed 1-for-4 with MACU's lone two RBIs.
GAME FOUR
Mid-America Christian (14-4) faced a similar predicament in game two, but the Evangels were able to score a couple more late insurance runs to pull away with another 3-0 win to complete the sweep. The Evangels scored their three runs on six hits while not committing any errors while Bacone was held to two hits and made three mistakes in the field.
MACU starter Ryan Wimbush tossed a two-hitter in six innings of work, walking only one and striking out five to pick up the win. Jaily Paredes recorded his second save of the season after scoring not allowing any runs in the seventh after walking a pair of batters.
Adames tallied half of the Evangels hits, batting 3-for-4 with MACU's lone RBI.
Mid-America Christian will return home on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup against its neighbor to the north, Southern Nazarene with a 2 p.m. first pitch at James Curtis Field.
