FORT WORTH, Texas – The Mid-America Christian baseball team provided a tough challenge to Texas Wesleyan in a doubleheader at Sycamore Park, but the Rams strong pitching was too much to overcome as the Evangels dropped both games 2-0, 7-2 on Thursday.
GAME ONE
Mid-America Christian had strong pitching performances by reigning NCCAA Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week Jaily Paredes and Frensly Leito. Paredes tossed four innings and gave up just two unearned runs on one hit with three walks and six strikeouts. In two innings of relief, Leito allowed only one hit to go along with three strikeouts.
The Evangels could only muster two hits against the Rams and committed one error while TWU scored its two runs off two hits and also committed a single error.
The only score of the game came in the bottom of the third when an error by MACU third baseman Andres Gonzalez allowed runners to score from second and third with two outs to make it a 2-0 game.
MACU's best chance to score came in the sixth when Yan Ely Adames led off the frame with a bunt single to third and Felix Martinez reached on a fielding error to put runners at the corners with two outs, but Paredes liner to center was snagged to end the frame.
Adames and Ricky Alvarez tallied the lone hits for MACU in the contest, as each went 1-for-3 with a single.
GAME TWO
Mid-America Christian (21-10, 0-5 SAC) found itself down 2-0 early to Texas Wesleyan (18-12, 5-3 SAC), but the Evangels fought their way back in the top of the fifth.
After Adames slapped a two-out single to right, Felix Martinez scored him on a deep RBI double to center to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the following at-bat, Colin Miner hit a single back up the middle to bring in Martinez, tying the score at 2-2.
However, the Rams closed out the ballgame by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to close out the 7-2 win.
Mid-America Christian tallied its two runs on nine hits and made one error while Texas Wesleyan scored its seven runs on nine hits.
Felix Martinez led the Evangels, batting 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Bernardo Moreno suffered the loss in relief, giving up three earned runs on one hit, a walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
Mid-America Christian will return to action after the Sooner Athletic Conference and the NAIA lift the suspension of competition that went into effect immediately after the conclusion of today's doubleheader.
