OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian baseball team swept Bacone in a four-game series for the second time this season, taking both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at James Curtis Field with a 5-1 win in game one before finishing off the Warriors 11-0 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
Mid-America Christian (19-8) once again got a stellar performance from its ace, Keisy Portorreal. The redshirt senior righty tossed his third complete game of the season, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, two walks and six strikeouts over seven innings.
Bacone put together a major threat in the top of the second when the first three batters reached on a pair of MACU errors and a fielder's choice, loading the bases with no one retired. The Warriors scored the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout, but the Evangels were able to limit the damage by getting a fielder's choice groundout to the pitcher with a throw out at home followed by a popup to second to limit BC to just one unearned run in the frame.
The first nine Evangels were retired in-order, but MACU leadoff hitter Edgar Martinez swung the momentum in Mid-America's favor by rifling a line drive over the right field wall to tie the score at 1-1 to start the bottom of the fourth.
Later in the inning, MACU took the lead by as Yan Ely Adames and Felix Martinez successfully pulled off a double steal with runners on the corners to make it a 2-1 Evangels edge. Andres Gonzalez drove in one more with an RBI double to left-center, scoring Martinez to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The Evangels added two insurance runs, one apiece in the fifth and sixth. Joe Martinez, pinch running for catcher Oliver Fernandez following a leadoff double, crossed home plate on an error by the shortstop.
In the sixth, MACU scored its final run on a Gonzalez sac fly to right to bring home Felix Martinez to ultimately secure the 5-1 victory.
Mid-America Christian scored its five runs on six hits and made two defensive miscues while Bacone scored its lone run on two hits and also committed two errors.
Felix Martinez was the lone Evangel to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Gonzalez drove in two after going 1-for-2 with a double and Edgar Martinez slashed 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run off the solo homer.
GAME TWO
Mid-America Christian (20-8) spared little time getting the advantage in the second game of the doubleheader as the Evangels pushed across five runs in the first inning.
Felix Martinez started the scoring spree with a sac fly to right to score Edgar Martinez from third to bring the score to 1-0. Later in the inning, the Evangels plated two more when the Bacone (1-22) center fielder dropped a deep flyball hit by Joshua Fernandez to center, allowing Yan Ely Adames and Gonzalez to score from second and third, extending the MACU lead to three. In his first at-bat of the series, Grant Roberts blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence to stretch the MACU edge to 5-0.
The Mid-America Christian bats went silent until the fifth when the Evangels plated three more. Joshua Fernandez started the inning with a double to center and advanced to third on an error before coming home on a wild pitch, increasing the MACU lead to six.
After loading the bases, pinch hitter Cameron Matherly smacked a two RBI single to left to score Roberts and Joe Martinez to make it an 8-0 game after five.
MACU starter Jaily Paredes was pitching a gem until the sixth. After tossing 5.2 innings of no-hit ball, BC's Luke Risenhoover slapped a single through the hole at second to end the Paredes' no-hit bid. However, Paredes did end the inning in-style when the bases were loaded, getting BC's Adam Deathridge to strike out looking to thwart the threat.
The Evangels put up another three-spot in the bottom of the sixth. Romi Rinehart drew a bases loaded walk to record an RBI the easy way and Edgar Martinez followed by slapping a two RBI single up the middle to cap the MACU scoring at 11.
Mid-America Christian ended the ballgame with a flashy defensive play when Evangels reliever Jairo Aparicio got the Warriors' Dylan Gibson to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
The Evangels tallied their 11 runs on nine hits with an error while Bacone could only muster one hit to go with two defensive mistakes.
Eight different Evangels recorded the nine MACU hits as Edgar Martinez, Matherly, Joshua Fernandez and Roberts led the way with two RBIs apiece. Fernandez and Roberts also each scored twice to go with their pair of RBIs.
Paredes improved to 2-0 on the season after throwing six innings of one-hit ball, giving up just two walks and recording a season-high 10 strikeouts. In his one inning of relief, Aparicio only allowed one walk before inducing the game-ending double play.
With the two wins, Mid-America Christian surpassed its win total from last season after the Evangels went 19-26 a year ago. MACU will have plenty of opportunities to add to it with 27 games remaining in the regular season schedule.
The Evangels will have a short turnaround as MACU will host Doane for a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Monday at James Curtis Field.
