Fitzgibbon Resigns As Head Volleyball Coach, McKamie Promoted To Interim Head Coach

OKLAHOMA CITY – Mid-America Christian Athletic Director Marcus Moeller is proud to announce Holly McKamie as the new Interim Head Coach of the MACU volleyball program on Tuesday.

McKamie was promoted from the assistant position after previous Head Coach Kevin Fitzgibbon resigned to pursue an opportunity outside of coaching.

"I'm excited to elevate Coach McKamie to Interim Head Coach," said Moeller. "She's a wonderful fit for our institution and our volleyball players will benefit greatly from their relationship with her. I look forward to watching the continued growth of the program under her leadership."

"I would like to thank Coach Fitzgibbon, Marcus Moeller, the MACU student-athletes and my husband for all of their support," said McKamie. "Coach Fitzgibbon invited me into the MACU family and even though our time together was short, we have assembled a great team.  Even though I have only been here since January, the team already feels like my family."

McKamie was hired as the Assistant Volleyball Coach in December, but was no stranger to MACU before her arrival. Not only did she lead the Oklahoma City Storm to three straight Homeschool National Championship apperances, winning two in 2017 and 2019, but has also served as the Head Coach for the Oklahoma City Charge volleyball club since 2016.

From 2000 to 2013, McKamie has also served as high school and small college volleyball official in the Oklahoma City area, which included officiating matches within the Sooner Athletic Conference.

In his one season with MACU, Fitzgibbon transformed the volleyball program, leading it to its first winning season since 2012 and its best ever conference record since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference, going 12-8 in league play and 15-14 overall.

"We're very grateful for the work Kevin did as our Head Coach," said Moeller. "He did an excellent job leading the program and we wish his family nothing but the best as they step into a new venture in life."

"I appreciate the experience and opportunity that MACU has given me," said Fitzgibbon. "It is with a heavy heart that I am putting in my resignation.  The providence that brought me to MACU is also what is leading my family and I on the path we are headed now.  I know the team is in good hands and it is for this reason I feel comfortable moving on in the direction the Lord is leading me."

Fitzgibbon led MACU to its first appearance in the NCCAA National Championships since 2004 and with a 3-0 win over Piedmont International (N.C.) on Dec. 6, picked up its first win at nationals since topping Johnson Bible College (Tenn.) on Nov. 7, 2003.

"Coach Fitzgibbon led this team through an incredible season last year and has set me up well for 2020," McKamie added. "I feel fortunate to have inherited such an extraordinary group of young women.  The returning players and recruiting class are phenomenal women both on and off the court.  We are primed and ready for an exciting season."

Despite losing four players to graduation, Mid-America Christian returns a strong core from last season, including its first NCCAA All-American since 2010 in Hanna Foecker as well as All-Sooner Athletic Conference Second Team libero Maegan Plunk.

"We have a full roster for 2020 with powerful players in every position," McKamie remarked. "We have two remarkable seniors (Foecker, Plunk) retuning next season and they will bring strength and maturity. Our returning juniors and sophomores also gained valuable experience on the court during the 2019 season."

Heading into their senior years, Foecker set MACU's NAIA era kills per set record at 3.95 while Plunk was a dynamic defender on the back line by setting the program's digs per set record with a 5.16 ratio.

"It's all about the players," added McKamie. "They are the ones who put in the work day after day and battle on the court.  I just feel blessed to have the opportunity to guide these young women. Despite COVID-19 shutting down our gymnasiums and workout facilities, our players have been working hard individually in the offseason and will be ready to grind when they come back in August. I have high expectations for MACU volleyball in 2020."
