OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off the most successful season in program history, the Mid-America Christian University men's soccer program will be adding a reserve team that will start competition this fall.
The Evangels have already inked 22 signees to the reserve squad and players competing on the team will have an opportunity to play for varsity roster spots as well.
MACU Assistant Coach James Roberson will be the coach for the reserve squad, but MACU Head Coach Mitchell Sowerby and Assistant Coach Danny Frid will serve in an advisory role to the team.
"I am excited to continue to work alongside young student-athletes and help develop them on and off the field," said Roberson. "The addition of the reserve squad will give plenty of game time for our players to continue their development and push towards earning a spot on the varsity roster. I can't wait to get the season started as the program is going to build on last year's success and go from strength to strength."
MACU is the fifth school in the Sooner Athletic Conference to form a reserve team, joining Southwestern Christian, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Panhandle State and Wayland Baptist.
The reserve team will play a major role in continuing to build upon the success of the varsity MACU men's soccer team that picked up a program-record 20 wins in 2019.
The Evangels last season broke every major offensive and defensive statistical record and capped it off by winning the squad's first ever NCCAA National Championship by a score of 5-0 over Grace College in Kissimmee, Fla. on Dec. 7, 2019.
"I am extremely excited about the addition of a reserve squad, as it allows us to increase competition throughout the whole program," said Sowerby. "It also gives us a chance to identity top young talent and provide a clear pathway for them to thrive in the college game."
