Men’s Basketball Bounces Back at Home Against Bacone

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 21 Mid-America Christian men's basketball team bounced back in a big way in its last game before the Thanksgiving break as the Evangels cruised to a 118-67 victory against Bacone inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Tuesday night.
 
TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian jumped out to an early 7-0 lead behind layups by Isaiah Hammons and Jasiah Lewis before Hammons buried a triple with 18:22 left.
    • Bacone's D'von LaPointe nailed a pair of threes during a 6-2 Warriors run to pull it back to three, but a Caleb Riggs lay-in ignited a 13-point Evangels streak. Riggs was responsible for seven of MACU's points during the run as Carlos Slaughter finished it with a layup with 14:57 to go to make it 22-6.
    • The Warriors trimmed it briefly to 15 on a Stephen Moore layup, but the Evangels once again surged with 14 unanswered as Quentin Woodson's offensive rebound and putback extended it to 41-12 with 8:51 on the clock. Woodson scored seven points during the streak while Toni Kumanovic poured in five.
    • A Daice Marshall bucket only briefly thwarted the MACU run as the Evangels countered with another 10 straight as Terrance Jones layup with 6:02 left brought it to 51-14.
    • The Evangels eventually extended its edge to its largest of the half at 64-18 with 2:14 to go off of a Jones spot-up three.
    • Bacone went on a nine-unanswered run over the final two minutes to close it to 64-27 on Ruben Little Head Jr.'s layup at the buzzer.
  • Second Half
    • The Warriors scored four of the first seven in the final 20 minutes, but a Hammons triple allowed the Evangels to score nine of the next 11 before Hammons picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for the lay-in to extend the edge to 76-33 with 17:02 to go.
    • Bacone briefly knocked the MACU advantage below 40 on a Malik Norfleet fastbreak layup, but a Woodson lay-in off a great Hammons assist allowed the Evangels to score 17 of the next 19 points as Jaylon Barnett's pull-up jumper with 10:28 left stretched the advantage to 95-42.
    • Following a BC fastbreak layup, the Evangels built their largest lead of the game following a 17-5 run that was finished on a phenomenal Eylan Goodwyn layup to make it 112-49 with 4:52 remaining.
    • Bacone outscored MACU 18-6 over the final stretch to wrap up the 118-67 final score.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian put together its best shooting performance of the season, knocking down 46-of-70 (65.7 percent) from the floor and converted a blazing 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) and converted a 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the foul line.
  • Defensively, MACU held Bacone to just 27-of-70 (38.6 percent) shooting and 9-for-30 (30 percent) from three.
  • The Evangels took excellent care of the basketball, dishing out 29 assists while committing just 10 turnovers while the Warriors had just seven assists to 16 turnovers.
  • The 118 points scored by the Evangels were the fourth-most in a single game since the program joined the NAIA in 2007.
  • Seven Evangels scored in double-figures, led by Terrance Jones, who poured in 20 points on 7-of-12 from the floor, 3-for-5 from three and 3-of-3 from the foul line with four rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
  • Caleb Riggs added 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting and 4-of-5 from three while Quentin Woodson came off the MACU bench to add 15 points on a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor with four boards and two blocks.
  • Isaiah Hammons tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from three with a team-high eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.
  • Rounding out the double-digit scorers for MACU were Jasiah Lewis (11), Toni Kumanovic (11) and Jaylon Barnett (10).
  • Mid-America Christian snapped its three-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 on the season while Bacone fell to 0-12 on the year.

  • Mid-America Christian will return to Sooner Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break. The Evangels will host Texas Wesleyan for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Thursday, Dec. 2.
