Volleyball Ends Record-Breaking Season At Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, Texas – The seventh-seeded Mid-America Christian volleyball team saw its record-setting season come to a close on Tuesday night as the Evangels fell 25-11, 25-15, 25-13 at No. 2 seed Texas Wesleyan in the Sooner Athletic Conference quarterfinal.
Here are all of the NAIA era records that were reached during the 2020-21 season…

TEAM RECORDS
  • By finishing 19-15 (.559), the Evangels recorded the most wins and the best winning percentage since joining the NAIA in 2007. The previous best season came in 2012 when Mid-America Christian finished the year with an 18-16 (.529) record.
  • The Evangels also recorded an NAIA Era record eight-match win streak from Sept. 5 through Oct. 22, surpassing the previous best streak of six in 2012.
  • Mid-America Christian turned in back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons after MACU finished the 2019 campaign with a 15-14 mark.
  • The Evangels also advanced to just their second NCCAA National Championship Tournament since moving up to the Division I level. The last time MACU went to back-to-back national championships came in 2003 and 2004, when the Evangels were still competing at the Division II level.
  • Defensively, MACU averaged 18 digs per set, breaking the previous record held by the 2017 squad (17.8).
  • Offensively, the Evangels recorded the second-best assists per set average (10.7), placing only behind last season's squad (11.4) in the MACU record books while the 1.8 service aces per set mark also ranks second behind the 2019 team (2.0). The 1365 kills put down is the second-highest total in a single season, sitting only behind the 1565 recorded during the 2010 campaign.
INDIVIDUAL MATCH RECORDS
  • In a 3-2 victory at Oklahoma Wesleyan on Sept. 14, Maegan Plunk shattered Shelbi Johnson's single match digs record (38) by coming away with 46. That mark finished as the highest in the entire NCCAA Division I level.
  • Hanna Foecker shattered her own kills record in a three-set match record in a 3-0 win over Langston on Mar. 29. In that match, Foecker laid down 24 kills on a .370 attack percentage, surpassing the 21 she recorded against Wayland Baptist on Oct. 14, 2019 and then again against Bethel (Kan.) on Sept. 22, 2020.
  • By recording 50 assists in a 3-1 win at Southwestern Christian on Mar. 15, Morgan Van Meir became just the second MACU setter to record 50 assists in a match, joining Team of the Decade honoree Calle Solie and marking just the sixth-time the 50-assist plateau was reached in the last 13 seasons.
INDIVIDUAL SEASON RECORDS
  • Hanna Foecker overtook the MACU Player of the Decade Christiane Costa (506) for the most kills in a single season with 526. As of Apr. 7, Foecker leads the entire NAIA in total kills and is one of only four players to surpass the 500 kills mark. Her 4.38 kills per set rate is also the highest in the NAIA Era, topping her own record of 3.95 set last season. On top of that, Foecker shattered the total attacks record of 1251 held by Costa with 1519 on the year.
  • Maegan Plunk finished the season with 671 digs, overtaking Shelbi Johnson's previous NAIA era record of 625 set in 2010. It was also just the second time in the last 13 seasons that a player had recorded more than 600 digs in a single season at MACU. Plunk also shattered her own digs per set record by averaging 5.59, ahead of her 5.16 clip from last season.
  • Kaylie Walker became just the third Evangels player in that time frame to record more than 50 service aces in a season, closing out the year with 54 and finishing second on the single season record list, just four back of Hannah Luedtke's 2014 mark.
  • Allison Porter's 0.92 blocks per set average was the third-highest in the NAIA era, sitting only behind Becca Anderson (1.49) and Kacee Montgomery's (1.13) rates that were both set in the 2012 campaign.
CAREER RECORDS
  • Hanna Foecker also surpassed Christiane Costa (844) on the NAIA Era career kills list with 897. With another season to go, Foecker has nearly an insurmountable lead in the program's kills per set record at 4.19 as Costa is the closet to her on the list in a distant 3.38.
  • Maegan Plunk overtook Camera Broadnax (1476) for the program's career digs record with 1550 with still a year remaining to compete at Mid-America Christian. Her 4.89 digs per set rate is also atop of the Evangels leaderboard with the next closest being Broadnax (4.6).
  • Kaylie Walker also moved into the second on MACU's career service ace list with 104, becoming just the third MACU player to turn in 100 career aces with Hannah Luedtke and Taryn Walker. Heading into next season, Walker is just 40 aces away from matching Luedtke's program record.
  • Morgan Van Meir climbed into fourth on MACU's career assists list with 1044, Joining Calle Solie, Luedtke and Alexa Bass on the esteemed list.
