OKLAHOMA CITY – For the first time in program history, the Mid-America Christian volleyball team had two players selected to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference Team as senior outside hitter Hanna Foecker and senior libero Maegan Plunk were named to the esteemed list on Friday.
It was a record-breaking year for both Foecker and Plunk as both broke program records over the course of their senior campaigns.
A 6-2 outside hitter from Sudlohn, Germany, Foecker closed out the year with 526 kills, surpassing MACU Player of the Decade Christiane Costa (506) for the most kills in a single season since the program joined the NAIA and Sooner Athletic Conference in 2007.
Foecker also shattered her own kills per set record with a clip of 4.38. She was the first player to average higher than four per set as she held the previous best of 3.95 set in 2019.
On-top of the season record, Foecker also passed Costa (844) on MACU's NAIA Era career kills record with 897 in her two seasons with the Evangels. It was a milestone year for Foecker in her collegiate career as she surpassed 1500 career kills between her two seasons at MACU and two seasons at St. John's River State College.
Foecker was a five-time SAC Attacker of the Week honoree and was also named MACU's first ever NAIA Attacker of the Week, achieving the honor twice this season. Foecker earned the Week 2 Attacker of the Week honor after recording 40 kills in a pair of three-set sweeps against Bethel (Kan.) and Friends (Kan.) at the Friends Tri-Match on Sept. 22. Foecker was also the Week 4 honoree after notching 33 kills at a 5.5 kills per set average and .422 hitting percentage in a pair of three-set sweep victories over Southwestern Christian and Central Christian on Oct. 10.
Foecker is now a two-time All-SAC honoree after being selected to the Second Team last season while also being named the league's Newcomer of the Year.
A 5-3 libero from Rowlett, Texas, Plunk is earning her second Sooner Athletic Conference honor after her record-setting season patrolling the MACU backline. Plunk earned Second Team honors in 2019.
Much like Foecker, Plunk broke four different records in the 2020-21 season, which included the match record, the season record and career record for digs.
In a 3-2 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Sept. 14, Plunk blazed past Shelbi Johnson's (38) single match record for digs, tallying a total of 46 for an average of 9.2 per set. Even to this date, she holds the most digs in a single match during the 2020-21 season among all NCCAA Division I institutions and one of the highest marks in the NAIA.
Her effort in that win allowed her to also set a new MACU first as she became the first Evangels player to earn the NAIA Defender of the Week honor.
Including breaking her single match record, Plunk also topped Johnson's single season digs record. Plunk closed out the year with 671 digs, shattering Johnson's 10-year old record of 625 turned in in 2010. Her 5.59 digs per set rate during the season smashed her own previous record of 5.16 notched during the 2019 campaign.
Plunk also went down as MACU's NAIA era career digs leader by the end of the season. With 1550, Plunk blew away the previous record held by Camera Broadnax (1476). It was in-turn, a milestone year for Plunk in her collegiate career. Along with her 513 digs tallied her freshman year at Randall, Plunk surpassed 2000 career digs in her four-year playing career.
Plunk received four SAC Defender of the Week honors over the course of the 2020-21 season, the most of any player in the conference.
With the NAIA granting an extra year of eligibility for all fall and winter student-athletes, both Foecker and Plunk are electing to return next season to compete as graduate students.
As a team, Mid-America Christian wrapped up the year with a 19-15 record under first year head coach Holly McKamie, breaking the school's NAIA era record for the most wins and best winning percentage in a single season.
