Volleyball Prepared for Road Matchups at Texas Wesleyan, SAGU

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team will be taking on two more challenging Sooner Athletic Conference opponents on the road this weekend as the Evangels will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take on Texas Wesleyan before making way to Waxahachie, Texas for a matchup with Southwestern Assemblies of God.

The Evangels will face the Lady Rams inside the Sid Richardson Center at 7 p.m. on Friday before lacing up against the Lions at 1 p.m. inside the Sheaffer Center.

    • Mid-America Christian is off to its best start through 15 matches since joining the NAIA in 2007, improving to 11-4 (.733) with a pair of victories over Bethel (Kan.) and Sterling (Kan.) on Wednesday.
    • By picking up 42 kills in the two matches, senior outside hitter Hanna Foecker continued to stay atop the NAIA leaderboards in both kills (310) and kills per set (5.25). Foecker is the only player in the entire NAIA that has notched more than 300 kills so far this season.
    • Lena Stockhammer is also putting up highly proficient setting numbers, as her 9.98 assists per set ranks 17th in the NAIA and her 589 total assists ranks as the second-most in the NAIA.
    • The Evangels will be competing in their third and fourth-straight conference road matches, all of which coming against opponents that rank in the top five of the SAC standings while Texas Wesleyan and SAGU are both receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.

    • After being decimated by an outbreak of the Coronavirus to start out the season compounded by facing a challenging non-conference schedule, Texas Wesleyan has been getting back on-track the last few weeks, winning five straight after going 1-4 through the first five matches.
    • Texas Wesleyan boasts the highest hitting percentage in the Sooner Athletic Conference at .234, which sits at 26th in the entire NAIA.
    • One of the most consistent players for the Lady Rams through the first month of the season has been senior middle blocker Veronika Webb, who leads the team with 90 kills on a 2.65 per set average while notching a .355 attack percentage, the 11th-highest rate in the NAIA.
    • TWU only recently got senior middle blocker Bailey Foy, the 2020 Sooner Athletic Conference Attacker of the Year back. Since returning against Langston on Sept. 10, Foy has notched 33 kills on a 2.75 kills per set average and a .388 attack percentage.
    • Mid-America Christian is still seeking its first ever win against Texas Wesleyan.

    • SAGU is a solid team in the attack, ranking 36th in the NAIA in kills per set (12.72) on a .202 attack percentage and 28th in assists per set (11.98).
    • The Lions are also a solid defensively, ranking 34th in digs per set (17.00) and 58th in blocks per set (1.81).
    • The Lions feature a balanced attack with four players averaging more than two kills per set, paced by Alexis Mealer with 128 kills at 3.66 per set and Ava Myers with 140 at a 2.98 per set average.
    • SAGU is led by the reigning SAC Setter of the Week in Riley Burcham, who ranks 11th in the NAIA in total assists (493) and assists per set (10.49).
    • While the Lions have dominated the all-time series, Mid-America Christian will be seeking its first back-to-back wins against SAGU since the 2010 season. The last time the two teams met, the Evangels snapped a 16-match losing streak to the Lions, topping SAGU in five sets (27-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-25, 15-13) at the Gaulke Activity Center on Mar. 8.
